New 90 Owner - Hi

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Not so long ago i registered on the site. As its been a few days I thought I would do a quick intro.

I am a 35 year old married Business Continiuty Manager from Rainham. 1 Kid, 2 dogs and I am fanatical about hunting and shooting.

I have been looking for a bargain Defender for some time for use as a shooting wagon, I also write for Shooting Sports and will be writing an article with regards the whole buying a shooting wagon peice. I am not mechanically minded so I hope to get more than just a shooting wagon out of this process. I have also posted this on one other local forum as I wanted to get as much feedback as possible.

I have been looking for a Defender for some time now. I finally got, what I think is an OK car yesterday. I have posted some piccies below. I paid £1500.

The first thing I am sure of is that I want to paint it NATO green. I will be getting this sprayed on, on the 21st

It's a G Reg defender 90 ragtop. v6 essex conversion, five speed manual box,3 inch lift, new tyres and brakes. Wax oiled I think. I have taken it to a local specialist who have advised that I did indeed get a bargain. I have changed a door striker, fitted a bump stop that you will notice is mssing.

I am going to sand and hammerite the Bumper and Cross member tomorrow.

I would like a new Winch Bumper and winch at some point.

I am very much open to advice on what to do to it, that's why I joined the forum. I have also joined a couple of others, just trying to saee where I fit in best :)

Nice looking Defender!

The first thing I am sure of is that I want to paint it NATO green. I will be getting this sprayed on, on the 21st - Have you considered painting it yourself with a roller (use radiator roller and small brushes) Paint from Anchor supplies (satin finish), would estimate the whole job will be around £60.00 inc paint

It's a G Reg defender 90 ragtop. - The canvas could (IMHO) do with being re proofed. If you search on Ebay for Canvas Paint, there is a lady selling all colours - changed mine from green to black

I would like a new Winch Bumper and winch at some point. If you do this, dont buy any extra springs or dampers until you do as it will affect the front weight. Springs can be matched to vehicle weight

Welcome and if you need any advice, this is the place to get it !

BTW is that kent or essex rainham?

Hi and welcome Shaggy - good look truck for the money I'd say

Bulkhead looks good - my only comment - looks like standard brake hoses - you will need extended for a 3" lift

Ideal shooting truck with the soft top - cold in the winter though

Always good to welcome someone else involved in country sports to THE best Land Rover technical forum there is :) I can see why you you want to change to colour to something that will blend in a bit better, the 90 will provide you with a good, if somewhat cosy, shooting platform for night time forays against bunnies etc.

Tidy truck you've got there, and a good choice of engine - these TDi owners seem to be getting a little too cocky, it's about time we have a few more petrol powered ones round here.

A friend of mine has a V6 powered hybrid he's rebuilding, putting a Cosworth V6 lump in :o his website www.ep90.com has some good tech on the V6 lumps, his was one of the first in the world to be running MegaSquirt'nEDIS.

I'll make some of your pictures appear - you need to use (img) instead of (url) tags:

Just sprayed the wheels black with hammerite, done the bumper and rear cross member. Its now raining :( I have put bin bags over the wheels in the hope that will do something. I used a full can of hammerite on the wheels. They could do with a couple more coats.

Makes a huge difference though. it looks really mean now :)

hammerite is waterproof when wet.... have you not got it on your hands.... its a bitch to get off.

for 1500 you got a REALLY good deal, infact im quite jealous

mines cost me 1400 and its not got half as much kit as that

yours had got polybushes aswell.

and the chassis looks in REALLY good order, it must have had a female owner before.

Hi and welcome

I would say that it seems a big shame to paint it Nato, your call

My Advice ?

DO NOTHING (other than fixing leaks and repairs) for 6 months, drive it, read, learn, and attend a off road day or 2 before modding it at all, aviod deciding you "have" to have x y z, and take your time

This way you'll mod your truck to help and benefit what you do, want it to do, and need it to do, rather than just write cheques for mismatches tat :)

Well, thats me done

Nige :)
