Coddy
Hiya, Newbie here so be gentle... I have a series 3 SWB with a tired 2.5 NA diesel lump. Have just been offered a 2.8 TDI from a Fourtrax, i know this is an option for fitting but want to know the pitfalls before going ahead with the swap. I would guess an adapter kit will be needed to mate engine with Series box, where can i get one from. Anything that will help me in my quest will be very much appreciated, esp any links to sites that has done the swap and written it all etc... Many thanks, great site by the way.. bill van snorkle
In light of the fact that series gearboxes are a bit on the fragile side, would it not make more sense to fit the Fourtracks complete engine/gearbox and transfercase into the landrover chassis ? Bill.

Yes it would Bill, but that i feel is beyond what I can do with space, time, skills etc. An engine swap i can handle, plus i dont intend doing more than a little bit of pottering about, so no M/way work or hard off roading, Im hoping the Series box will cope with that... Discovan300tdi
watch out with the conversion plate as one of my mates had a 2.5 daihatsu in his 109 and there was a problem with the threads in the casting where the starter bolts to it the second time he started it the threads stripped and the starter came out. He cured it by drilling the threads out and replacing them with two long bolts and threadlocking the nuts on.
RPR
KB "KevinNY" to whom Jim refers above can be reached via PBB. He has put an NOS Santana box behind the 2.8. I think this box is pretty much the same as the late Series box but with more cooling fins on the casing. He believes that it is possessed of stronger internals. In any event, he has been using it for several months now with no ill effect. I have a Series box behind a 3.5 V8 in the Tonka that has worked well now for over a year. While Bill's advice to put the whole Daihatsu transmission behind the powerplant makes good sense, I think if you have an adaptation kit for the SIII box available and the gearbox is in good shape (or is freshened up now) you can probably get away with it for some time, particularly if you are judicious in using the skinny pedal in 1 - 2 low range and are easy off the traffic lights in high range. Nevertheless, I suggest you purchase the gearbox and transfer case now so that if (when) you need it later, it's handy...

I have bougt a complete Fourtrax for the sum of £200, and I know the car so the engine is a good un, will be taking it out as a complete engine/gearbox, so will do some measuring and see if fitting it complete is an option, failing that I have a spare series box on the patio much to my wifes disgust......
