2lt TD belts

Now that I have swapped my spanners and socket set for a set of clippers and a comb I have suddenly become completely unmechanicalised (is that a real word??).

This morning as I reversed out the drive there was a funny snapping sound and then I had no power steering. :( As it was peeing down with precipitation I decided not to check it out and just stuck Vinnie back on thne driveway, phoned a mate and borrowed his 4.6HSE Rangie <_< to get to work in.

What struck me as odd tho is that the rev counter was still working, yet the battery warning light was on. Does the rev counter not work off the altenator any more or is that just soooooo 80's?

Also, is it possible to change the belt (s) on a 2lt diesel lump with no more than a screwdriver, adjustable spanner and a hammer :o

Cheers

Dan :)

If you need spanners I can pop round tonight? Need to tighten the belts on mine as it happens...

Sounds like a plan to me :) Gotta pop into Brookies on the way home to pick up new belt, and a load of other service items. Should be home about 6:30, so anytime after that :)

I have a packet of hobnobs left over from the "Ryan snorkel fitting" episode ;)

I would put money on the belt tentioner has coursed it and the sand from Slab had a hand in it.

Hmmmm... got round to having a look 2nite. It's pretty well knackered! The belt has twisted right round and wrapped itself around a pulley. Got if off eventually with a bit of tugging. ;)

And Jules is right, the tensioner is completely shot. :(

Anybody any idea how to change it?

Hi Jules... Cheers for the offer. Is that the "Dave Haynes" or the a haynes book of lies?!

I have also just had a shifty through the Rave manuals that I forgot I had

I think you are right. The tensioner looks just like a 300tdi one, only a bit smaller. What I'm a bit concerned about tho is that it LOOKS like you have to take off the power steering pulley to get the tensioner off. I may be wrong on that, but if you do then it looks like the offside engine mount has to be removed and the engine jacked up :o

Do you know for definate which is the case?

Either way I can't get a new tensioner until Tuesday so I'm stuck with the use of my mates 4.6HSE Rangie until then... shame! :D:lol:

Jules... Nope, not sure at the mo. I'm probably making mountains out of mole hills. New tensioner is arriving on Tuesday so will be chatting Mike up for the use of his tools :moglite: (all mine are still in the Camel !! ) and will find out for definate then.

Deano... Cheers for the info :) . That looks like timing belt changing stuff tho, not fan/steering/aircon belt.

Finally managed to get this problem sorted :)

The tensioner sits slightly behind the power steering pulley, hence my question above, but having now attacked said tensioner with an 8mm hex socket and a ratchet I can confirm that you don't need drop the engine down or anything silly like that, it just slides out from the gap quite nicely.

Back on the road with cheap, merry mortoring B)
