landybear
Guys, Have a vibration coming from somewhere and think its coming from around the gearbox area. I am hoping its not the gear box itself. Its worse when i accelerate when slightly laboured (being lazy) say 30 in 4th. If it is the UJ's whats a good way of checking for play??? LandyManLuke
get underneath with a pry bar or big screwdriver and see if there's any movement. grease the UJs up (just like you do regularly....) and take it for a drive and see if the grease packing has removed the vibration. Ultimately, take the props off in turn and go for a drive in diff lock. In my experience, it doesn't take too long for a rumble in a UJ to turn into easily spotable signs, the collar that retains the needle bearings in the cup will probably start to show signs first. landybear
Its strange Luke cos i grease every 800 - 900 miles being careful not to squeeze the seals out. I will give it a whirl and see whats whats. Will report back later on Cheers

western
not good practice to push the grease seals off a LR UJ, it may not reseat & even though full of grease will let moisture into the joint, 3 or 4 strokes from the grease gun is plenty for a UJ, if done every 3 months. landybear
Seems to be better - like i said in earlier post its worse when engine is slightly laboured - but 5th is especially bad with a quite definate drone - few pumps with the grease and fifth gear is now fine. However i am thinking more towards gearbox now as when i am going down hill in say 4th and then take my boot off the gas it vibrates worse than when accelerating!! What do you guys reckon?? Cheers
LandyManLuke
In my experience, UJs are noisier when they're unloaded as they're not 'locked up' under the torque of the engine/box, and therefore make more noise/vibration.
disco tony
I had a really bad one some years ago when I was new to landrovers, it knocked like buggery on overun but was fine under load. Still sounds like UJ.
landybear
ok will have another look i dont think i am being hard enough with testing for play cos its not obvious.
Les Henson
You must have slack in the drivetrain, so chock the wheels and neutral/handbrake off. Les.
LandyManLuke
good point! no point checking for play if the handbrake is holding it all still...
Stevie D
How much play is acceptable in a uj? I get a low frquency 'hard' / 'soild' bump bump bump when decelerating at low speed, suspect a uj or cv myself. Nothing on accelerating etc. Apologies for highjacking the thread. landybear
Not hyjacking just adding info. I will crawl under and check tomorrow with handbrake off as it would help will post again if i find any different. cheers
Les Henson
There should be no play at all in a U/J. They rapidly deteriorate once there is some movement in them like this (note the right hand cup)- Repeated greasing will put off the inevitable, but once play is detected they should be replaced as soon as possible.
