BiggerBaloo
As the title says, everytime I go through a big puddle (not a lake, but anything more than 2 inch deep) it feels like I lose power steering for a few seconds (5 max). As I'm completely clueless can anyone give me a hint of what to stand and look at for a couple of hours before taking it in to a garage? Thanks in advance Martin
BogMonster
Water on the power steering belt makes the belt slip. May be worse if the belt is a bit slack but if it's a 300Tdi as your signature suggests, there is nothing that you can do about it as the tensioner is automatic. 88 Nick
I had that problem, was just the power steering pump belt slipping, check its tight or replace it. Cheers Nick
BiggerBaloo
Cheers guys. Yeah it is a Disco 300tdi. If it was the belt slipping would I be able to hear it (like an alternator belt)? For the price of a new belt I'll put one on when I get a bit of spare time in daylight

BiggerBaloo
Is there a way to adjust the automatic tensioner??? just thinking out loud.
freeagent
Not that I know of, although its possible the spring might have gone and you'll need a reconditioned unit. I'd try buying a new, genuine parts belt (available from Paddocks for about £10, made by Gates or Dayco) and stick that on...

western
My 200Tdi does it too, big puddle drive through it steering gets really heavy for a minute or two, then is OK again.
TheRecklessEngineer
The tensioner sometime gets gunked up with mud. Pop it off and soak in diesel overnight/liberally coat with WD40/move it around a bit...
