The Beastie has been bashed!

Recommended Posts

Got back to car park this afternoon to find front off side wing bashed. No note - surprise! I suspect it might have been a lorry since it is a bit high up for a car to damage this way.

I am not sure how best to deal with it and wondered if anyone had ideas. Not keen to jeopardise my own 40 years no claims for something so minor. What puzzles me is that there seem to be two layers of metal that have separated - an outer layer with the paint on and an inner, structural, layer. Is this normal?

It looks like I could break off a big flake of the outer layer but suspect it is not the best thing to do. The lights are OK but a bit of the black panel by the lights has broken off.

Any ideas as to best solution would be most appreciated. Somehow duct tape would not show it off at its best!

Thanks

Malcy

OK

No huge surprise there since everything I was told when I got it 18 months ago seems to have been a load of ....

Am I best trying to bend out and re-fill; leave as is; or am I looking at a new wing?

If I take the old fractured filler off I suspect I am going to end up with a levels issue. I have to say whoever did fill and respray spent a lot of time and effort on making a good job of it!

My experience is that filler and Land Rover bodywork don't mix - the panels are too flexy and once bashed, it'll just keep cracking.

What to do depends on your approach to dents - if you feel they add character, then tidy it up a bit and keep it. If you want it to be all nice and straight you're probably into buying a new wing and headlight surround. If you're fully comp your insurance may cover it but check your NCB before claiming as it could end up costing you more to do it the official way.

Thanks guys. This is really helpful.

I have not needed this sort of thing since aged 17 (a long long time ago!) with a lovely Austin A40 where all my love and attention went into the engine but I overlooked the need to do likewise with brakes :o

Not even a scrape since

To trash the panel like that and not touch the bumper you are looking at a high veh. You can bash it out a bit from the inside, better off taking it off like Nige said and having a look. Front panel is only about 10-15 quid IIRC plus a wing skin plus paint. Looking at best part of 150 all in. Or you could take it off sort it yourself and live with your efforts. Hard choice.

Sorry to read Beastie has been beasted by a big bully, the outer side panel is a bolt on job, the headlight panel is torn & is attached to the top panel [look in the engine bay just at the side of the radiator to see the rivts/spot welds, it can be seperated & rivetted back on, [done it on mine].

Thats not filler - paint from landrovers does come off in big flakes, i know from my 04 TD5 i wrote off, the wings could practically be peeled off in big chunks and that was factory paint, never ben near any filler!

carp! Sorry to hear about that. Someone rammed my 90 last year while it was parked and drove off. Some dents, bends and scrapes on mine but nothing I couldn't live with. The huge pile of bits they left behind (bumper parts, light clusters, part of the rad...) indicated that theirs didn't come off so lightly :)

My 90 was lucky and hit by a car (which must have compressed itself under the rear crossmember and hence tore all the bits off as it backed out). It definitely looks like something bigger clocked you :(

I have now had a proper look in daylight and without so much red haze steaming up my glasses.

The big flakes I mentioned are now clearly filler. I measured with a micrometer and it is between 2.1 and 2.4mm thick. It is also clear looking side on to the break in the paint that it is filler as further down it is simply a layer of paint several microns thick onto the metal. There is a bit of plastic breakage and a bit of torn metal.

I think initially I will try to know out and remove any sharp edges of metal to make a bit safer. Ultimately I will probably get a new wing but will tie this in with a fill re-paint job so it may wait a while.

I am not sure whether to try an fill and paint since I suspect my efforts may look worse that simply the scraped and battered metal.

Thanks for all your help and sympathy. CCTV didn't cover the corner of the car park where I was - and come to that if it had been a local lorry I think, knowing the area, I would be best leaving it to save myself getting beaten into a pulp :o

Not far off, Craigmillar actually. Same sort of sensibilities though!!

Thanks for offer of help - were you on the SLROC run last Sunday? I seem to recall your nom de guerre from their site but perhaps the old brain cells are getting too addled!

Best wishes
