Jon White
I'm getting fed up with my top tailgate smacking me on the back of the head every time the gas struts decide not to hold the tailgate up so its time for a new pair. There's someone on ebay selling them for £5 a pair, or paddocks do them for £5 each. Anyone tried either of these sources as they almost seem too cheap!!! Anyone know if they're of reasonable quality? Cheers Jon
Miffy2A
Hi Jon, I replaced mine with Paddocks ones a few years back. No problems with them. A new issue that's just occured is the tabs they connect to on the upper tailgate have started to shear off. Think this is wear related though and no problem to do with the struts. Jon White
Thanks - a set of el-cheapo ones it is then! Cheers Jon
FridgeFreezer
If it's toolie.v8 selling them on eBay (shop is called Range Rover Classic Recycled Parts) he's a ShireLRC member and local to me. He always sells good stuff, most of the vehicles he breaks have MOT & tax when he buys them
Jon White
John, No - there are various people selling NEW ones at around the £5 a pair mark. I know Martin Toole - I've had a few bits off of him in the past. Cheers Jon
willfromsussex
i found a dumped fruit machine in the woods and that had gas struts on the lid, to my surprise, perfect fit on my early rangie, slightly longer than original, the tailgate goes up further when open. haven't decided what parts of the car to operate with the handful of buttons i got from that machine yet! FridgeFreezer
No - there are various people selling NEW ones at around the £5 a pair mark. I wouldn't bother with eBay if Paddocks are doing the same thing, at least you can phone them up and grumble if they're rubbish.
Jon White
Thats what i was thinking - by the time you've paid postage as well it works out the same price.............might price a pair in Gotties when I'm in there later aswell. DEANO3528
ISTR fitting some Metro ones on my 2 door years ago. It was a bit hard to pull down though as a RR top tailgate doesn't weigh anywhere near what a Metro tailgate does. Most importantly they were free as the motor had been dumped in the garden. Jon White
Shiney new pair purchased from Gotties this afternoon - sorted. Sodding air suspension seems to have sprung a leak now cos it ends up leaning like a beached irish ferry after its been parked for about 10 minutes! That set of coils I've got in the garden is looking tempting......... Cheers Jon
