davidfox123
I'm trying to get my 90 to the point where I can use it every day without the hard pogo stick ride. Whatever springs/dampers are fitted they are really hard and give a very harsh bouncy ride. Anybody know of any aftermarket springs/dampers that will give a more comfortable & compliant ride? Is it fitted with Heavy Duty Springs - meant for carrying/towing heavy loads? As a result it will be more harsh ride with no load. It shouldn't be that uncomfortable though! FridgeFreezer
If you search some of the suspension threads in the tech archive and have a look at Trev's spring calculator web page you should be able to work out some nice soft springs to fit. DiscoRyan's recent thread in the Disco forum gives some guidance.
landmannnn
On defenders I have owned I have never found the ride to be harsh. Quite the opposite in fact. I suspect a previous owner has upgraded, are your springs orange by any chance? Unless you want a higher ride height I would go for standard springs and shocks. tjolliffe
I agree with landmannn, just so long as you dont have a lift kit fitted I would go for standard springs and shocks all round, you cant go far wrong then B)
Top90
A 90 is normally harsher than something like a 110 (or many other vehicles) due to the length of the wheelbase which can make the ride a bit choppy. If that's not the problem then speak to a few companies that do suspension. With standard springs and dampers (not HD) you should get a nice ride. There are several suppliers such as Devon, Scorpion etc.. Ideally find a company near you, take the vehicle in so they can have a look and talk to them face to face. Then if it's not quite right you can change them easier. Taking parts off and exchanging when you have bought by mail order is more of a headache and you only have the opinion of someone who has not seen or ridden in the vehicle. Richard I do 500 miles a week in my 90 and it's fine, so it is possible.
davidfox123
Thanks everybody, I thought maybe Bilstein or similar would do something better than stock?
landmannnn
David, most people go for aftermarket shocks to improve the handling or increase suspension travel so they don't really care about reduction in ride quality. The problem with going to aftermarket is that you would really need a 100% correct combination of springs and shocks to get it right. Go standard and save what you haven't spent for the next project.
