oldlandy
Anybody got info on how to convert a 1985 def 2.5 n/a diesel to a turbo photos would be great
TomG
I don't know much about the diesel side and am happy to be corrected but I think this is basically what Land Rover did with the early 2.5TD as it is the same block as the 2.5N/A. In turbo form suffers from cracked pistons and bottom end failures. The engine was superseded by the 200TDI
discojmz
yep as far as i know they took the same engine, same internals everything and slapped an airresearch turbo on. i recently rebuilt one in our old 90. was a d reg, hadnt blown up (as most did lol) but the pistons were a right old cracked mess. but anyway, back to the point, it runs like an absolute dream now. purrs like a kitten (am i mentally disturbed for rebuilding a 19J??) i think all that was added was the turbo, obviously accompanying hoses, oil feed and return to sump, and im not 100% if it needs a new pump or just something adding to the pump to adjust fueling on boost i have photos somewhere if they'll help you at all might be easier just to buy a 19j engine though, and if you were going to do that, probably a tdi would be more sensible (ps, 200s are better than 300s ) jim
B reg 90
Think that they have different pistons in the turbo version that can handle the higher temps if I remeber right. You also need an oil feed for the turbo - think that you can drill the block for this. I will have a turbo 2.5 d for sale in the next few weeks - can be heard running/test driven. 77k miles, runs fine. if your interested - pm me. FridaT
Differnt block casting (turbo take off) which has differnet main bearing housings. Pistons, manifolds, fuel injection pump are also different. Cracked pistons are due to combustion abnormalities - Ie overheating and/or faulty fuel injection equipment. Correctly installed, maintained and keep a turbo diesel cool and it will last as long as any other diesel engine. DaveSIIA
TB Turbo's used to do a kit for turbocharging the 2.5NAD. About 6psi boost, so not too excessive. I've got one fitted to my 2.25D IIA and it lifts the performance a bit - cruises quite happily at 70mph with RR diff's. Used kits turn up on the likes of Ebay from time to time.
