Banda Engineering, Portsmouth

Anybody ever dealt with Banda Engineering in Portsmouth? If so, any good?

They seem to be the only place in Portsmouth that do engine reconditioning according to Yell.com

Looking for a local company that can rebore, regrind crank, supply pistons, bearings etc etc.

Saunders over in Cadnam have done me proud in the past, but they aren't overly quick... or cheap!

Ta :)

You gonna take it out to 2.8?

No more cookies for you if you keep on like that, young man!!:blink:

And another question...

When I did Jens Disco a few years back we stuck a new turbo on it, but I can't for the life of me remember the name of the compnay we got it from. I know they were up north, possibly Liverpool?

Anybody any idea of any good Turbo suppliers?

Oi! Stop it! Nasty evil influencing man! :P:ph34r:;)

What, I didn't even mention it'd be cheaper to drop an LS in! Which it would...

Just seems that while someone is waving machinery over your block you may as well give them an extra few minutes' work and get something a bit nicer done ;)

M8 at work has used them, but not for engine rebuild work. There is an engineering firm at cadnam I have used to balance propshafts which can also do engine work. There is also the small place on the way into Gosport on the A32 next to the small Saab place just before the ESSO garage before the Newgate Lane flyover. I have used him several times as well as have some of my other m8s.

I need to either buy a new turbo or get mine reconditioned, so I phoned around those that were within a reasonable distance of me. It's amazing the variation in price for the same job. One company I spoke to (Turbo Technics), told me that the bearing housing was shot and would have to be replaced (I wonder how he knew that). Anyway - It was more to repair it than it would cost to buy a new one! Prices in general ranged between £150-250 for either exchange items or fix yours.

Les.

I had a 2.5 petrol block rebored and had the crank polished by them 4 years ago (I did the actual engine rebuild). They did a very nice good value job. The work shop is a typical oily place, but I got the impression that they are busy and dependable.

My engine gets driven hard in the 110 and it still doesn't use any oil or have any issues.

Point to note, when I went to pick up the block, the water ways were still full of water and sludge from the 'block wash' process. When I got it home, I turned it over and flushed all the residue out. Make sure you do this because the acid used in the block wash process loosens all the limescale and deposits in the waterways and you might suffer from cooling problems if the sludge is left there.

I got the pistons and bearings from Paddocks. Stage 2 head from Turners and a Power Plus cam from ACR.

Diff

i've had heads skimmed at Banda, they we ok, no idea on more precise work though.

boring and polishing i had done in a firm up north (guildford way  ) cant remember their name at mo.

i used to use pompey rebore but not sure if they're there anymore.

pistons and engine parts i bought all genuine from turners.

Cheers for all the info chaps... B)

I'll think I'll be dropping it off with them 2moro for the whole shooting match. They have quoted 425+vat for rebore, new pistons, regrind crank and all the bearings. All on a 2 day turnaround which don't seem to bad to me.

I'll have to build it up myself, but have done a few rebuilds in my time, so no problem there :)

Diff, good pointer about giving it a flush through... I'll keep an eye out.

I'll post up and let ya know how it goes.

Have fun!

Another point worth noting for anyone building up their engine out of parts that have been machined elswhere, take the time to thoroughly clean out all oil ways as well as water ways before assembly. This should include the crankshaft which has drillings through it.

When you buy a rebuilt engine or have one rebuilt for you, you have to assume this work is done before they build up the engine (their reputation as engine builders is on the line). If you have parts like cranks and blocks and heads machined for 'home assembly' it is up to you to make sure there is no swarf or sludge stuck somewhere waiting to cause you grief! This includes cylinder heads from ANY engine parts specialists.

Also, if you are not very sure of the condition of the core plugs, you should consider replacing them before building the engine.

Diff

Make sure you really work at cleaning the bores as they will still have honing grit in the surface.

Clean with brake cleaner and white paper towel. The towel will come away grey at first. keep cleaning until there is no sign of dirt on the used towel.
