TheRecklessEngineer
Thought you guys might like to see this. I acquired this v8 last week from a mate for my vapour build - been sitting around for a while with an unknown history. Thought I might be in luck at the time as there are some quite shiney bits! The core plugs look fairly recent and it looked quite clean inside. However...tried to turn it over today...and it wasn't happy about it. Really stiff and some nasty grating noises coming from inside. Started to strip it and had a few unpleasant surprises. Water has got into the bores (and frozen!). One of the threads in the head is starting to come apart and another one looks like it has been patched together with chemical metal and loads of sealant. Luckily, I have another engine coming (still running atm) with known good heads...cos I put them there! So, even though I'm in for a rebuild, I have some good bits to start from. I've never rebuilt an engine before...so there could be some interesting posts in the not too distant future...
LR90
Straw on the workshop floor is a good idea for soaking up spilt oil. Is it any better than sawdust?
TheRecklessEngineer
It was there before I moved in - something to do with the cows that were there before me
Fatboy
James, Going by the amount of black carbon in the valley, I'd say it was kinda due a rebuild anyway. I had a similar issue with water in bores but when it was all cleaned out, a 20 thou rebore removed the slight pits nicely. I needed new pistons anyway so it wasn't an issue. Have a trawl about on the RPI site and the Tech Library on here to get an idea of the things you need to look out for. Its been said a million times, V8's are fairly straightforward to rebuild but attention to detail pays muchos dividends...
Scotian
Did you say the engine actually started and ran even with the Ice inside? If it did that is pretty damn impressive "get you home" factor for landrover
TheRecklessEngineer
I had a very surreal conversation with RPI about this today - ended up with the expert chappy hanging up on me. All I really wanted was an idea how much it is likely to cost me to rebuild this to a good standard. I'm not looking for a race engine, but would like something that will give a bit of ooomph over standard without melting. I've had a good read through BBC's wonderful rebuild thread, and various other info around on the web - would I be unrealistic to allow 1000 squidoolians for the following? Rebore +20 thou Head skim Crank regrind New mains/big ends New pistons/rings etc... New camshaft/lifters Timing chain posh wotnot New rockers/arms New valve springs By my maths this comes to 700 ish, allowing 300 for something to go wrong... About £800 ish will do a rebuild ........................ Who at RPI ..........I assume Chris .................... does Holly still work there ? I buy nothing from them ........ all my kit comes from Real Steel and LR OEM Following some good reports from Nige, I get my maching done here .................http://www.ocservice.co.uk/ .......... this is a 270mile round trip for me, but their work is from a different planet and the pricing is more than resonable.
