GloPlug wiring

I've had 2 different Disco 200TDi engines in my 90 now, the first one I didnt bother with the glo/heater plugs as in the UK I dont think you ever need them. Here in Romania its been -10 and more and I had to turn the engine over more than a few seconds to start it. And with the old battery it wasnt making it.. Starts fine now with a new battery.

Anyway. to help things I wired the plugs up with a standard 30amp relay and a switch on the dash (it was a petrol engine originally so didnt have the wiring)

Thats all I've done, 12 volts straight from the battery (via a relay) into the first (nearest the bulk head) plug. All the plugs are connected in daisy chain as they are ment to be.

I've used a volt meter and with my girlfriend pressing the button on the dash there is 12 volts getting to every plug.

The thing is that it doesnt seem to make any difference atall in the mornings. Its difficult to test this fairly but it still seems to take as long to start (less than 3 seconds) with or without the plugs.

Is there somthing I am doing wrong?

Inside the gen relay there is a temp sender thingy. Even after the the engine has started, if it's cod enough it will stay on. How long are you holding the power on to the glowplugs? I'd say you'd need at least 15-20 secs

I was only holding it for about 5 to 10 seconds as that is about how long the orange light on a normal 200tdi stays on for before you are ment to turn the key..

I cant remember exactly. but a few weeks ago I was trying it for short times and much longer and it didnt seem to make any difference..

they unscrew just similar to a spark plug, to test ---------

get your jump leads out, connect one end of each lead to battery terminals, connect the Negative lead to the glowplug body & the positive lead to the terminal at the top [same as the wiring fits to] hold the glowplug in pliers so you don't get burnt fingers, it should glow cherry red within 5 to 10 seconds, if it doesn't glow or takes a lot longer, you need new ones. best to wire them up correctly

If you have a pair of mole grips - grip the body of the plug, rest the handle of the grips on the negative terminal of the battery and touch the positive terminal with the threaded top of the glow plug. The tip should smoke and turn orange withing a few seconds. If nothing, then the glow plug is no good.

thanks. I will get onto it and see how they are. From that wiring link there doesnt seem to be anything I'm missing. I'm not using a timer relay and not using the ignition but this shouldnt make any difference. I'm happy with manually holding the button, this also give be more control to be able to heat longer on colder days instead of going back and foward with the key to heat them more.

I see what you are saying about varying the times but IIRC the relay still poweres up after the engine is running by a varying amount of time depending on the temp sender in the relay. I think the light going out is enough to get you started but it still needs a little help afterwards which you won't get with your set up. I do know the relays are expensive if you go Gen. Some one posted up a link of compatable/similar relays not that long ago. Worth having a search for

The relays are a Ford part! even my 200Td (when it was new waaaaay back in 1992) had "ford" mouldled in the top of the relay.

it's the same one used in 90's escort and sierra diesels, so if you take a gander around a scrapyard you should find one for not much money (they even fit into your pocket quite nicely too..... :ph34r: )

This link from Mr Wuffles might help... it shows what wiring you need (very little in fact) to plug into the original loom so that you have "factory" glowplugs.

STC 934. The small loom that goes from the main loom up to the dash for the lights and ign feed to the relay is on back order at LR. No date of when it's due in. I ony know that because I was after 1 but then after tipping my garage upside down 3 times I found the I purchased about a year ago. Still got to wire it in though.
