swiftkick
Hi to all on what looks like a great forum! I'm about to buy a 2001 Y TD4 ES 5 Door Freelander with 72k on the clock. With all the probs reported on this forum I'm now bricking myself thinking it won't even get me home! I have to drive it back from Bath to Cornwall - I know you guys have had as many joys as dilemmas when it comes to freelander ownership but am I making the right choice? I've gone from an uber reliable golf tdi. . . . . Am I in for a shock and should I upgrade my AA to recovery? Cheers

FridgeFreezer
Pick any car forum and you're going to come away with a list of problems - the freebie isn't too bad (says the man with the blown engine ) just remember it's a Land Rover so it will need a bit of attention every so often. I find the knowledge that you're never more than a phone call away from a flatbed taxi is rather reassuring though, however I also have a slightly older Land Rover that gets used properly so things can happen that require the services of the taxi. jules
If you join any forum you will always only hear the bad things and not the many thousands of happy freelander drivers. People don't post "my cars grate it never lets me down" so it makes things look worse than they really are. All cars are very much the same... Land Rover's like to give there owners something to do at the week ends

Its just given me a lot more knowledge about them than I had before I joined the forum. My first job will be to remove the standard radio cassette player and fit my MP3 cd player. It was dead simple on my rover 200. Are there any pitfalls on the freelander to trip me up or is it straightforward?

Land Rover's like to give there owners something to do at the week ends My car's great, it never lets me down........... but it did get stuck yesterday.............. ruts deep enough for the 90 in front of me to drag it's rear diff on the floor really are to deep for a Freelander! However in general it is brillaint and only now at 90k hard misused miles is it starting to make some funny noises, and yes I will buy another one!! Les Henson
I understand there was/is a problem with the TD4 Freelander Turbo's? Andrew Kennedy of this website had the turbo chucking oil into the pipework not long after he got it and I was at an MOT station yesterday - there was one in that had blown the turbo - it was belching a lot of grey smoke and was so gutless it had to be recovered. I my turbos rotary face seals go on my 2000 2 litre just before Christmas, when they go, the engine runs on the engine oil, you cannot stop the motor and it tries to rev to destruction. This one sounds like the intercooler pipe is chaffed through, no boost means overfueling and no power, my foremans did it a couple of weeks ago, whilst the workshops had it in they changed the clutch [05 Td4] what a b&^^*y job, definately not one for on the drive on saturday afernoon
