Wolf Snorkels

A question for the MoD guys or those in the know.

As some are aware, the MoD has been fitting snorkels to all the XD TUM and TUL vehicles. I'd like to fit one to my XD, but in the tradition of keeping the specification as accurate as I can, I'd like to source the right type of snorkel.

I've seen some for sale on FleaBay but I am not overly convinced of the authenticity of some of the snorkels advertised on EBay.

As I unfortunately haven't had a chance to see a snorkel equipped XD up close, I'm curious to know who manufactures the snorkels fitted by/to the MoD

Does anyone know? Any information would be greatly appreciated

Mantec make 'em - bog standard 300 TDi/TD5 affair. Wing vent cover off, drivers side, placky pipe bit on, metal tube up screen mushroom on and flexi to join the 2. Then passenger vent cover off, fix blanking plate to replace standard wing vent, cover back on, job done - if it wasn't for the screws on the vents NEVER coming out without drilling/cutting, whole job - 1 hour tops. They are just fitted to reduce dust ingestion ONLY - so the pipe work inside or out is not sealed in any way other than by the clips - no silicaset or whatever as they aren't meant to be waded with them cos they ain't there for that (things like the FFR alternator having a vent pipe that sucks air through it into the air-stream entering the filter make it impossible to do so)- now the winterised/waterproofed/Postal courier versions - they are meant to be waded but they are a different monster altogether..........

You can buy 'em easy enough from most dealers/landy bits sellers - as long as its Mantec, (or pay out that little bit extra and get it from the main stealers, though its got a LR sticker on the box, believe me having both types - its the same thing!), and it comes complete wit the blanking plate its the right one - you may even be lucky enough to get the version with the plastic pipe for the screen - much better to install and looks waaaaay cooler - I fitted one on mine in the Gulf recently...........

Click Here for the relevant page of the mantec site - you are after either :

Raised Air Intake for Defender 300tdi and TD5 - Plastic

RAISED AIR INTAKE FOR DEFENDER 300TDI AND TD5 - PLASTIC (1-DPSV-R/04)

OR

RAISED AIR INTAKE FOR DEFENDER 200TDI AND TD - PLASTIC (1-DPSV-L/04)

Mantec Plastic Raised Air Intake for Defender 200tdi/TD models.

OR

RAISED AIR INTAKE FOR DEFENDER 300TDI AND TD5 MODELS - STEEL (1-DSV5)

Mantec Steel Raised Air Intake for Defender 300tdi and TD5 models

Any of those will fit and have been in the past or are currently fitted to TUL/TUM XD - and anyone who says different can come to my LAD and eat all of the ones we have fitted, so there.....

stageonesimmo & russ3120,

Brilliant info there. Again I've seen some "Wolf Tickets" on EBay and I do want a snorkel on the XD90 solely to keep the induction above the dust that often gets kicked up when I venture out with the local LR club. And to be bluntly honest, they just look cool too!

I found a blanking plate on FleaBay too, the Seller isn't asking too much for it either. Looking at the instruction leaflet photo in the Auction, it looks as if the snorkel mounts on the right of the vehicle. Please let me know if I've got that wrong as the Mantec page shows them mounted on both the left and right hand sides of the Defenders and my 90 has a pick head mount on the right wing top that looks like it will get in the way.

Thats the waterproof version - much more involved fit for a higher level of protection - outside the SF crowd they are commonly used by Postal and Courier sqns, but thats not the snorkel you after I imagine?

The basic one bolts onto the RH side of the truck with the blanking plate on the left (the 2 wing vents are linked to allow easier breathing and to allow one to be under water whilst still letting the truck breath). The standard or GS (general service) type wont interfere with the pioneer tool mounts at all..........

Most of our fleet are fitted with them so I bag some photos tomorrow and get them up as soon as I can.........

I've had the pleasure of a close up and personal inspection of the waterproof/winterised TUM variant.

They are incredible, wade in salt and fresh water up to 1.5M deep, operate in temps as low as -46°C, totally waxoiled during production and also fitted with pre-heaters etc. That just demonstrates what a great company Land Rover are being able to produce a vehicle with that ability

The snorkels are uber ugly but when it comes to functionality, looks don't sure count for much

Hello, the original miltary wolf MANTEC kits are availble from www.lrseries.com however you have to ask for them as they are not in their MANTEC section. As in one of the previous replys you will have to specify whicjh side you require as they do one for left and another for right hand drive.

They supply BLanchards with them for their wolfs (they may have some photos on the web site sory dont know their web address).

Hope this helps, james..

if you are after the mantec version they are available from Mantec via their website www.mantec.co.uk

I once enquired at my local LR dealer about the filter canister for the waterproofed/winterised version. They wondered if I was serious about buying one. When I said yes, they delivered the killer blow. £1098+vat and that was about 5 years ago. That price was just for the high level filter canister!

and 17 port and maritime regt, all of our Wolfs (should that be wolves?) are fitted with that kind of snorkel, due to the high chance that they will be driven off a Landing craft into the sea at some point.

What do they do with the speedo etc on the inside for the super deep wading?

What do they do with the speedo etc on the inside for the super deep wading?

Years ago, one of the magazines ran a several page feature on the Marine's version of the Wolf and how it was tested by jumpint off a landing craft and the driver had a full drysuit and the thing was properly underwater! The were also in a big tank doing testing and showed the marinising kit, which took yonks to fit.

Sorry, long winded; if memory serves the gauges were covered in a big bag, similar to the drysuit material which was sealed.

It was either in LRE or LRO.

Not sure on the TUM/TUL, but the original Defenders had a modified binnacle with sealed boxes for instruments, switches and fuses

General view

Instruments. A clear cover is screwed and sealed over each one for wading. Note also thecolumn switches have a collar for covering with condom type rubber covers.

POJ004.jpg

A metal cover clips over the centre console with a rubber condom type thingy to allow the ignition to be accessed. The TUL/TUM ones are plastic.

POJ006.jpg

All electrical connections are replaced with these

Hope that helps

[i notice that this one has a heater vent out the side of the dash to blow onto the side window?

Is that what it is ?

Side Screen Demisting - fitted to Winterised Military Defenders procured during 1991

Theres a link in my signature to download the Supplementary Military Parts List that details the parts required.

I fitted them to my 110 around 1995 and it's well worth having, here's some pics of mine -

Here's an extract from the Parts List -

PartsDiag.jpg

PartsList.jpg

The dealer looked-up the prices and wrote them against the part numbers - this was around 1995 IIRC.

The diagram doesn't make it very clear but, item #1 - Part No. RRC7316, is the adaptor that goes onto the new dash end pieces to enable the convoluted hoses to connect to them, you require 2 of this part (one for each side).

I think that you are also supposed to use 2 x RRC7316 to connect the side-screen convoluted hoses to the new dash closing panel, item #4 - RRC7320.

I didn't buy the new dash closing panel or the adaptors for it, I used my existing dash closing panel and used a holesaw to cut two holes of the right diameter into it either side of the hole where the hose for the L/H windscreen demister outlet is connected (roughly where shown in the diagram) so that the new side-screen convoluted hoses are routed behind the bulge in the dash trim. I de-burred the edges of the new holes and with a pair of pliers I 'kinked' the hole so that the convoluted hoses screwed in to the panel. I then put sealer around the joint.

I'm not sure if any of these parts are still available from Land Rover but, if they are, I expect that they're silly-money.

You could always make up your own side-screen demisting from Ducting and Vent Outlets available from Europa Specialist Spares and modify your existing dash end pieces to suit.

Are the two extra pipes for the side windows T'ed off from the heat pipe for the pasenger side of the front windscreen?

Thanks

Steve

No, they're taken to 2 x holes in the airbox closing panel RRC7320, adjacent to the hole for the LH screen demister pipe.

This panel (#4 in the diagram) cost nearly £35 (in 1995), so I didn't bother with the new panel and just made a couple of extra holes in my existing panel.

this not one of ours, but its has the same raised air intake. give google a try loaads of pics on thier

Any chance anyone can show what is under the cap on top of the snorkel?

I did a year with LandRover working on the wolf raised air intake design and I'm wondering if the concept made it to reality. So far I have seen them drive past on the road but not been able to stop and look....

And I haven't found much on google for the right one.
