v8bobber
afternoon all, Not having a good day so far, I did write a long and convoluted post earlier and it seems to have dissapeared, so here goes again, apologies if it turns up on the forum again later! Right. To cut a long story short, i am in the process of planning an 80" trialler build. I have a disco 200 Tdi to use as a base. Malcolm Whitbread will be supplying one of his frames but the rest of the work will be done by myself. I am doing the planning work now whilst as I have been banned from doing anything in the workshop until baby number 2 is sleeping through the night. This question relates to what gearbox to use. A previous post on this forum showed that a Lt77 defender box or a series box was the way forward to maximise the propshaft lengths. I can see the advantages and disadvantages of both boxes but just wondered if anyone had used a series box behind a 200tdi, especially for trialling? The series box is attractive due to its low cost and good availability but then i also remember that the gearchange on my old series three was pants. Also. if i was to use the series box would i need to use the series clutch aswell or the 200tdi one? I also guess that it would be a series clutch slave cylinder to go with it? What i'm trying to achieve is getting various bits and pieces together before the project starts proper. I'd like to get the engine and box some TLC and painted and tucked away in the corner of the workshop before any massive bits of land rover turns up (ie, before the missus notices!!) So, any experiences or preferences (keep them Land Rover related please.......!) Cheers, Dave
muzaz
do you think a series box will be up to the job? I think its weak to go on with a Tdi... I'm in your situation as well as have yet to decide what box to mate with a disco 200tdi for my ser3 88", I think I'll go for an LT77 from a defender, disco ones have a long bellhousing, its not good for an 88" chris

Theres at least two triallers in my local 4x4 club who are using series 3 boxes but behind V8s so i should think that a tdi shouldnt stress it too much. I would intend to rebuild it anyway with a set of new bearings and what not before use so i can forget about it. In your application, which i assume is putting a tdi in a standard series three then keeping the original box would certainly be more straight forward for you. horses for courses hey Dave

Lets see what the experts have to say
lrfarmer
Hi the LT77 is slitely better for trials as you can take the difflock in &out on sharp corners also you can pull the handbrack on to get it to slide the back wheels out as well, can be usefull to miss the canes.
