Luwts
Hi, my friend bought a 3.5 V8 carbs and he would like to fit it instead of his Td in his 90. Our plan is to find/make at an engineer, an adaptor plate to fit the engine to his Lt77 without changing any gearbox, mounts, propshafts and tunnel. I knew that sometime i have seen this adaptor plate somewhere, liek ashcroft, or turner...but here in Malta is quiet impossible to find this, so were doing the adaptor in a local engineer shop. Is there someone here who already done this? anyone knows the pros and cons please? got any pictures? Thanks Luwts
Bull Bar Cowboy
There are a couple of manufacturers that can provide the adaptor, however, if you leave the gearbox in its original position then the engine sits a long way back, also you will need to cut n shut the bulkhead to clear the exhaust manifolds on the N/S. Also you will need a custom exhaust. If you move the gearbox location then you are looking at new props and also adapting the gear lever. A better way is to get hold of a long stick LT77 gearbox from an early RR, or alternatively fit a new long input shaft to the existing gearbox and use the V8 bell housing. This then allows you to use the standard V8 exhaust and hoses etc. Ian
gelf
or even easier is to fit an LT85 box.
Luwts
Ok, if we find a Disco Lt77s for a V8? I suppose we can change the gearlever/difflock part with the old one and keep everything in the same postion....am i right?
FridgeFreezer
The Disco / RR V8 gearboxes have long (30cm) bellhousings which may put the engine very near the front in a 90.
Luwts
Ok, is there someone in here to tell us what exactly do we need, including part numbers? like bellhousing, output shaft and from what vehicle......i suppose Lt77 V8 90 which are very rare in here too Thanks

Er no, not really ............... the LT77 rear housing and selectors are different between the long stick (def) and short stick.................I looked at doing the conversion myself, but by the time I had bought all the parts for both the rebuild and conversion, the recon route was cheaper, much cheaper......... So I did mine by throwing a couple of gearboxes at Dave Ashcroft and saying ............... "Dave, build me a V8 LT77 def gearbox "........... he promptly walked off and returned 5 minutes later with a fully built Def V8 LT77S on a pallet that was due to go to Greece (long story)............when it comes to all thing gearbox, Ashcroft are the only people to trust.................. Gremlin
Luwts, from long stick to short stick you need to dismantle both boxes as the selector rod is different i belive, its not a matter of just swapping the gearlevers, i did it with an r380 and it was a nightmare getting the right bits. Ah and one bit of advise from a fellow maltese, do not have the flange made locally, many so called engineers will make a mess and you will regret it in the long run. Put a wanted ad on these forums maybe one turns up. If you want i have the tech drawings for a flange. Grem
roguevogue
Stop all this messing around and fit a RR V8 with Efi and the associated auto box and be done with it, i'll guarantee you'd prefer it to one of those stick stirring gearboxes. reads90
Speak to jules on here . He did it to his old 90 years ago and will be able to help you. He put a 4.2 V8into a 2.5 diesel 90 (not a T/D but same engine with out the turbo)As he did i would put an auto in it at the same time
jules
stick a 3.9 /4.2 auto in from a RRC clutches are soo over rated. I'm not that good writing in detail. if you are about to do it, give me a ring you will not need to do any chut and shut or doggy convertion rings and it can all be done using standard part. the only welding is your engine mounts
