disco tony
As title, rounded the head of the top offside front caliper bolt, (the awkward to get at bugg3r). Any tips on getting the blighter out? What is the next size socket to hammer on? (or not as the case may be)
Def Rich
had this prob today managed to get a 13mm socket on with the aid of a hammer then used a breaker bar to remove, also give a good blast of WD40 and leave a few mins did the trick
Matt Neale
had this prob todaymanaged to get a 13mm socket on with the aid of a hammer then used a breaker bar to remove, also give a good blast of WD40 and leave a few mins did the trick The caliper bolts are 12 point - they'll round off easily if you use a 6 point socket. The above advice is good, but I'd suggest something like "plus gas" instead of WD40 - use it and you'll see why. Last time I dealt with rounded caliper bolts I was able to borrow a set of Snap On bluepoint bolt extractors. Not cheap mind (£167 retail!) but you use them like a normal socket. The bolt just undid, no fuss or drama. Saving my pennies for a set now! Matt
kiall
use a 1/2 12point 1/2 drive socket on a breaker bar smooth and even pressure
Steve Warman
Just a comment from a novice but if I have a rounded head I have a set of Irwin nut removers which are like sockets and work with standard ratchets but are designed to bite into the nut head and grip like buggery. You need to replace any nuts you use them on but they helped me take off me old recovery points from a 20yr old rear x member except I had to exert enough pressure to twist my cheap ratchet driver. Milemarker Type S
Another vote for the Irwin Jobbies... very effective. I bought my set from Mole Valley Farmers for slightly less than the Screwfix price to solve the exact same problem... Took me longer to pay for them than it did for me to get the knackered bolt out with them
jacks906
dont think it was the same bolt but i welded an old socket on a rounded off bolt once and it came off with ease :-) dave
Matt Neale
Sorry for the thread hijack there! The Irwin extractors look very similar to the Snap On set don't they?! Might have to dap in to Mole Valley and collect a set.... Matt
