British Engineering and the wind

I think since it was owned by BMW at the time we will blame the Germans. I was giving someone a lift to the top of a windswept hill in my P38a when they had the great idea of opening the door and letting go! The wind took the door (passenger front) and put it to about 125 degrees, snapping the retaining strap and both the stops on the hinges, bending in the wing and creasing the door.

I was so impressed with them at this point.

My question, does anyone know someone with an old p38 NSF door that i could respray and put on (or a black one) ebay seems a little empty at the moment.

Many Thanks

Don't think you'd fare any better with most cars Ben - I've seen a few doors wrecked that way!

Might be cheaper to get it couriered?

Hi Geoff, been a while, hope you are well,

the dent in the door isn't huge and i have pulled the wing back out so I am mulling over just replacing the hinges and strap and just taking a small hit when i sell it b4 i go to Aus, its not in perfect shape anyway so how much difference the dent will make i'm not sure.

Since you lane it a bit anyway, why not leave the door for now, and replace it if it's worthwhile before you sell it? That way if it takes another knock there it doesn't matter.

Don't know how much help this would be (or if you've decided to bother) but I'm driving from London to Manchester on Saturday (to pick up my classic at last) and if you could get door to me by Friday night I would happily drive it up and you could collect from Hyde (an little jaunt over the snake for you).

I have noticed the retaining plates on the P38a have a tendency to work loose or even break. Perhaps this was also happening to yours, making it less able to withstand the force of the wind.

Anyway, good luck with the repairs!
