Hi All , I'm new to this forum and I'm hoping someone can help me , I have a Discovery 1 98 R reg 3.9v8i ES that runs very badly :(:(:(

For example it does about 8 mpg , it struggles to tow a 1400kg caravan , it seems like its missing , this is worse when cold , it is also worse when running supermarket fuel , the missing is not regular it can be not as bad then for a few minutes its terrible .

Its been into 4 Land Rover Specialists where I have spent to date £1200 and am still no better off .

Parts that have been tryed or replaced are as follows :- Plugs , Ht Leads ,Coil , Distributer , Dizzy Cap + Rotor Arm , ECU , Air Flow meter , Fuel Filter....

Can anyone help , I like the Discovery but feel like giving up with it :(:(:(:(

Regards

Nigel

Temperature sender? Would make it run very rich. I think - though not 100% certain - that the sender which feeds the ECU is not the same as the sender which feeds the gauge so if this is the case, the gauge may say it is normal. I think if the sender is disconnected or not working the ECU also defaults to a set temperature for fuelling, which is probably rich.

Oxygen sensors (if fitted) - likewise would usually make it run very rich if defective.

And finally check the timing - I had a rough running problem with mine and discovered somebody had set the timing after TDC not before TDC which doesn't do much for economy, power or smooth running :rtfm:

Wot he says

Coolant Temperature sensor (CTS) this is a black screwed in sensor - at the front of the block, on the inlet manifold to the right (standing at the front looking in at the engine) of the themostat housing, has a 2 pin plug timer type plug clipped on it. When this fails it will tell the ECU things are Ice cold, the ECU responds with mass of extar fuel everywhere, so it will drive like you have a choke pull on.

cost is about £15, buy a GENUINE one :)

Fit one and report back

Some dealers you seem to have ????

Also to the above.

With the ignition off, remove & clean with Electronic Contact Cleaner preferably, or Meths, the Air Flow meter multi-plug pins & the mating female slots on the plug.

Ignore the fact it is 'new', just do it.

Slightly reset by a slight twist with pointy nose pliers, each of the pins on the AFM, pull the rubber boot back on the plug & check for loose or broken wires. Replace firmly.

Go for a good drive & report back, please.

You say the fuel filter has been replaced. Are you 101% sure it has? The symptoms do sound a bit like a restricted filter as well.

If the dizzy cap & rotor arm are not GENUINE LR parts then they too can be the cause of strange running problems.

If in doubt buy them from a LR franchised dealer.

Check that when you turn the rotor arm with your fingers that it snaps smartly back to its original position when released. If it doesn't, the auto advance/retard mechanism in the bottom of the dizzy could be disengaged or it could be rusted up.

Certainly giving the AFM pins a slight twist cured the symptoms you describe in my case. Mine was erratic and it would run fine sometimes and not idle / chug black smoke at others. Sucked juice, no power, etc, etc. Certainly worth a try as it's quick and cheap! Good luck :)

Hi All , Thanks for all your Help , To answer a few questions , I 'm in Stoke on Trent , so have tryed without naming people , dealers or (so called):angry::angry: Land Rover specialists in Hanley , Fenton , Middlewich and Congleton.

To give some more detail on the faults , it runs rough all the time cold or warmed up , it seems to me as if if its missing , but the missing is not consistant and on starting it smells of petrol , the last repairer said it was either the cam shaft or it needed a new engine as its worn out :blink: !!!!! It has done 76k with 3/4 service history .

The fuel filter is new , I was there when it was done .There are no faults showing on the ECU last time it was in a garage .

Will try what you suggest and report back .

Thanks very much for your advice

Nigel

Hi All ,

Have replaced the temp probes as suggested , still no good ... Have found a local garage with an ex Landrover mechanic who knows his V8's , he has stripped it down and found the fault to be a badly worn camshaft and coked up heads , these are are now being sorted so fingers crossed (and everything else .....) it will be working again properly
