Godlykepower
Noticed a few splashes of coolant on the drive t'other day. Nowt major. Was on my way to that area, so popped into my garage and asked their opinion..... I was told it could be the P-gasket, but he was unsure as the engine heat had stopped the leak due to expansion. Where else might a leak originate from in that area? I noticed that the leak was ever so slightly larger this afternoon....but still could not quite see where exactly when I got my nose in there. Any help appreciated.
western
P gasket area is left side of water pump to engine joint, just above the alternator. IIRC there's a thread in the tech archive index about changing this gasket & look under the 'how to with Les' listing too.
Godlykepower
I had a look at the Tech archive as you suggested, found the "How to with Les" bit, but I dont really feel comfortable doing that sort of work on my own. From the pictures, it certainly seems as if that COULD be where my leak is coming from......could there be another option perhaps?
western
have a look around the underside of the water pump nose behind the pulley, there's a drain hole to allow any leaks to escape, could be a seal in the pump has given up.
Mo Murphy
The p gasket leaking is very common on 300s and a known weak point. There is a later upgraded gasket which will cure the problem. Mo
mmgemini
What colour is the header tank. Black Then check the back of it for a split. The later clear/white one aparently do not split. mike Mirror, mirror On the wall Let them beg Let them crawl.
landybear
I was in the same position as you with a coolant leak. Coolant was dribling down onto the sump. I got advice from here and changed the P - Gasket (got a metal one so three new fixings). It was my first job on the landy and i didnt think i could do it (didnt have the confidence) but i did. Hardest thing was shifting the power steering pulley as the tension of the belt didnt slacken it. Oh and i couldnt get the water pump to seal but that was my fault. Follw les's guide. Its a lot easier when your doing it rather than reading it for change!!
