Aragorn
[hard hat mode] A pair for the v8? [/hard hat mode] I'm sure a pair of turbos would wake an RV8 up nicely, however i dont think i've seen VGT's on any petrol engines yet, which presumably there is a technical reason for, as they've been using them in dervs for over 10 years! darthdicky
Found this here:http://paultan.org/2006/08/16/how-does-variable-turbine-geometry-work/ "Variable Turbine Geometry has been used extensively in turbodiesel engines since the 1990s, but it has never been on a production petrol turbocharged car before until the new Type 997 Porsche 911 Turbo. This is because petrol engine exhaust gases are alot hotter than diesel engine exhaust gas, so generally the material used to make VTG turbos could not stand this heat. The 997 911 Turbo uses a BorgWarner VTG turbocharger which uses special materials derived from aerospace technology, hence solving the temperature problem." LuisLanca
I can't seem to be able to contact pete or ian, as they don't reply their e-mails. Are they lost somewere in Europe because of the volcanic ash? I really like to have one of those turbos under my bonnet. Thank you Luis Lanca

BogMonster
Do you folks do a 300Tdi VNT? I understood you did, and I emailed Ian about it a long time ago but never had an answer.
ajh
It's the 200TDI ones I'm interested in, being limited to older vehicles and doing LHD conversions the 200TDI is a much better option. I can bring in 300s now but the left footbox on them forces the throttle pedal far too far inboard to be comfortable, so building some 150HP 200TDI's is in the cards. BigSi110
so what is the answer for the 300tdi,is there a turbo for it, please say yes, Brian I've just had a VNT fitted to my 300Tdi 110 by Brunel and can really vouch that you have one fitted. BogMonster
So are all these 300Tdi turbos the same thing then or do Brunel offer something different?
BigSi110
No idea. Brunel did the fitting. Turbo came from Allard. Not the best kit in the world as a few of the fittings needed to be changed and modified to suit, but Brunel knew what needed to be done so that wasn't a surprise. The end result is excellent, in my view. Couldn't get a reply from IRB so no notes to compare on that front. Not knocking anyone as I know they're busy. But Jon Norman at Brunel really knows his stuff and did an excellent job of the VNT kit install and setup. I added a heavy-duty radiator to the job from Motor and Diesel which has an extra litre capacity, just as a precaution. Jon fitted that at the same time. Motor & Diesel also do VNT kits and they recommend a heavy duty rad when doing a VNT job anyway. My original needed replaced so the timing was good. Needed a slight tweak to my coolant alarm to get that functioning properly as the rad top cap is a slightly different size to the original. Haydn Coolant Alarms supplied a top hose insert for that. Porny
So are all these 300Tdi turbos the same thing then or do Brunel offer something different? The 300Tdi I'm offering will be unqiue - it is not off the shelf - or one modified to fit. I stand to be corrected, but is the Allard kit not just the one fitted to the 2.8TGV? In which case, the air filter and exhaust get swapped round and you have to start using none standard pipework etc etc (including the exhaust). The reason our turbo is taking so long is because Turbo Technics have designed a new manifold that replicates the orignal so that the turbo sits in a standard position - thus the exhaust, intercooler and oil feed pipework stays standard. As per the Td5 turbo - I like components to look factory - and as if they should be there, rather than looking like an after thought with messy pipework. The first 300Tdi full prototype should be done in the next few weeks and will be going on my 300Tdi Defender for addtional test work. As with the Td5 turbo, it will not be for sale until we are 110% happy with the turbo, and it is fully tested. When fitted I will post picture or three. Pump wise - obviously you can do the normal modfications, but you will have the option of an exchange fuel injector pump specifically spec'd to match the new turbo. And as with the Td5 turbo, you will be able to buy it in a couple of specifications to suit the application and vehicle setup/usage. BigSi110 - my apologies for not getting back to you. Bush65
Going from the pics of the Allard VNT kit, it looks identical to the one that Allisport sell. They don't use parts from the International 2.8 engine. They have a new one piece exhaust manifold the puts the turbo in the stock position and everything bolts up and looks factory. I know someone who has the kit from Allisport on a 300Tdi, Defender 130, it uses a larger turbo than the one used on the International 2.8 and performs well. I had a turbo and manifold from a 2.8 on a 300Tdi and it is a Garrett GT2256V. From memory, the one from Allisport is a Garrett GT2559V (1st 2 numbers, 22/25 is turbine size, last 2 numbers, 56/59 is diameter of compressor impeller in mm). Boost pressure is a function of compressor impeller tip speed squared and in general the larger impeller will generate less heat in the air to compress it to high boost pressure (more efficient) - this is assuming similar inducer (inlet) diameter (air flow rate is related to area of inducer). Philip Tonkin
Drove my TD5 for the first time today in over a month as I have been too bust to sort the MOT. So with a crisp certificate in hand I got to remind myself how good it is with the VNT. :)
