Making an exhaust

Recommended Posts

I decided whilst looking over the 110 yesterday that it needs a new exhaust.

Lying there in the dirt looking at it got me wondering about whether to buy another bog standard one or try and make one?

A slightly more purposeful exhaust note would be nice (its a 200TDi so it won't be exactly sporty).

Is it worth the effort to make one?

Is it difficult? Presumably I just buy some tube and borrow or hire a big bender and measure twice before bending then curse a lot trying to thread it in around the axle all the time...borrowing a mates 2' ramps might help here I suppose...

Do I bother with silencers? I replaced the rear one with straight stainless ages ago and it made virtually no difference to the noise levels.

I quite fancy a side exit at the rear with a shiney D4x4 trim for a bit of bling, am I losing the plot?

Is 3" tube about right? what wall thickness, should I go mad and save some pennys for stainless tube?

Any thoughts gratefully received :)

Will :)

maybe worth consulting a local exhaust specialist.

we have one up here (worcester) that will custom make you an exhaust for about £300 in stainless steel, including fitting. you can even specify what you want it to do, eg side exit, twin tails, quad tails etc....

by the time you have bought the tube, cut it, measured it, bent it, welded it, re cut it, re welded it and finally fitted it it may work out cheaper to have one made....just a thought

Its a horrible job doing an exhaust, plus you'll find bending exhaust tube a nightmare of the finest order - this is not your pipebender type jobbie, needs more exotic :moglite: kit

Off the shelf or custom built, DIY not recomended !

I'm saving my pennies for a scratch built system, looked into DIY and have dismissed that, and theres no off the shelf option for me either :(

On a standard car it's really not worth the arse - a stock system is pennies off the shelf from paddocks, if you want to chop a silencer out and splice in a straight bit that's far easier on the floor.

What the short, bespectacled and unshaven one says (FF). Then buy a repacement pipe for the center box. To be honest the loss of both silencers is a tadge on the harsh side at full chap.

When I need a replacement for the 100" I shall just buy another 110 system and get out the hacksaw - it's easier

By way of an alternative - go and see what you can find in the skip behind your local ATS or QuickFit - there are usually loads of good boxes and bits of pipe. Then weld together out of pre-formed bends from the skip.

I have also in the past made the difficult bits out of tube which you can bend easily. It's thicker wall - but it will never rust through and you can guarantee you'll never have to make it again.

The exhaust on my new truck (strangely enough) is made from the same tube as the cage - with an off the shelf box stuck in the middle.

I made 2/3 of my exhaust on the 109 from the std Tdi Downpipe exit to exit behind the rear (n/s) wheel series stylee , 1 new length of 2 5/8" straight and 5 pre formed 45deg. bends in the same dia from my local motor factor £50 for the bits and 2 hours.......mind you that was on the 4 poster in my workshop and not on the ground.

I made mine because its not std, I could have cut n shut a 110 200Tdi system though and for a std Land Rover I'd just get an off the shelf jobby

Cheers

Thanks o wise ones :)

It looked easy enough lying in the dirt looking at it but I bow to your higher experience!

I had looked at the jetex stuff on the Demon Tweeks site and pondered making it from bits but thought bending up a tube from scratch would be a lot simpler given the convulted nature of a 110s exhaust...

I might leave it to last and see how the budget holds up on the other bits and then maybe go for a stainless system. I am not going to see the 110 so its probably worth the effort and expense.

I would've thought bending up a tube from scratch would've been a lot harder given the convoluted nature of a 110s exhaust... ;)

I've made a few downpipes for various conversions and a couple of complete systems too. The bends are always the hardest bit to do though and they need to be as shallow as possible or you'll suffer from excessive back pressure. The good thing about making your own is that you can tuck it away more than a standard system. As for no silencers - I understand that a straight through system on a 200TDi is a bit annoying at higher revs. I plan to just have a rear silencer (resonator) and nothing else.

Making an exhaust is a bit of a faff, i would buy one, but i would look at increasing bore size the 2 1/2" like the 300 's as i reckon this lets 'em breath better, a straight through centre pipe is a must IMHO makes a difference to turbo spool up.

If you do decide on making your own system try this web site for angled sections and straight pipes etc. Reasonably priced as they say. I assume you can weld o.k. as tha will ultimately limit the life of the system as well as the boxes.

Use the menus on the left side of the page for exhuast items:

late 300 tdi exhausts are worth looking at - wide bore and only a single central silencer. The exhaust doesnt cross horizontally at the back either like a 200tdi as later defenders had the fuel tank there.

You coud even do away with the silencer using an off the shelf silencer replacement pipe if you want it a bit noisier, but personaly I've found the silencer to be unrestrictive anyway being a straight through type with only a couple of mesh baffles in the air flow (which I knocked out with a hammer and broom stale) ;)

Think I paid 100 quid end to end, for me not worth mucking about with pipe benders for a weekend and all the agro.
