stick a voltmeter across the two +ve terminals of the batteries, set to measure dc voltage.

When the relay is closed, the values will be near identical, when the relay's open, the engine battery will be sitting at a higher voltage than the aux battery.

Just to clarify on terms.

relay 'open' and 'closed' are the opposite to, say, a plumbing/gas valve.

relay closed = current flow

relay open = no current flow

The relay will close when you have a 12v circuit supplying the solenoid in the relay (the two small terminals).

When the relay closes and opens depends on how you've wired it up. If you've used the warning light circuit on the alternator the relay will close/activate as the warning light goes out. if you've used an ignition supply it'll close/activate when the ignition is on.

In both cases, it should open/deactivate when the ignition is turned off.
