Wiring glow plug timer

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I tried to do a search but came up empty handed so now I come to you.

I'm building a hybrid and it's come to the wiring stage of the build. I'm using a 200Tdi.

My questions:

1) Is a 200Tdi timer relay the same as a 300Tdi relay?

2) How long should the glow light stay on when you first turn the key on?

3) I found a wiring schematic for a Disco but I fear I may have put something in the wrong place as my light does not go off at all. Does anyone have a schematic for a Defender?

4) Should there be a wire that goes to some sort of a temp sensor?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, both the same LR part number PRC6913

2) How long should the glow light stay on when you first turn the key on?

about long enough for you to switch on & fit your seatbelt on. approx 8 to 10secs

3) I found a wiring schematic for a Disco but I fear I may have put something in the wrong place as my light does not go off at all.

Does anyone have a schematic for a Defender?

Yes -- see below picture

4) Should there be a wire that goes to some sort of a temp sensor?

No.

Thanks for your help.

Awesome! I'll double check what I have.

Terminal #4 is for "white to any white in vehicle harness"...I'm not using a standard Land Rover harness. What are the whites in the vehicle harness?

usually a ignition controlled 12volt feed to things that need power to start the engine & comes off the position of the ignition switch that lights the oil pressure & battery charge light before you actually turn to the spring loaded position to start the engine.

And if you look at a genuine LR timer, even from the first 200Tdi's back in the 90's, you'll see that it's got "ford" on the top of the moulding!

they're the same timers used on (diesel obviously) escorts/sierra's/transits of that era, so you should find one at a scrap yard somewhere for a few quid.

Mine has a smooth top face & the LR oval logo printed on the forward face along with the LR part number :P

Mine has the LR logo on it too.

So I tested my glow plugs. All four of them are broken!! I shorted them straight across the battery terminals and nothing happened.

I don't know if this is the cause of the glow light staying on but it certainly isn't helping anything.

I've got four new ones coming and I'll try again when I get them installed.

LR must have had a batch of ford ones back in 1992, as my 200tdi had a foreign one fitted from new
