Wattle
I have a 1956 86" series 1, it has the 2 litre petrol engine and dynamo fitted. I am trying (without any success) to fit a new fan belt. The belt that came off is the same as the one going on, it has GFB 40995 marked on both of them. I think this is a Unipart number for this model. I struggled getting the old belt off even though it was stretched and badly split, and the dynamo is as far back as possible. The new belt just does not look long enough, it could do to be an inch or two longer. Is there a method of fitting them other than brute force, because i have already tried that. Or is there a longer belt that is available. Thanks Phil
Les Henson
I don't know if there's more than one size, but I do know they are hard to get on due to thickness of them and the 'v' in the pulley. Try unbolting the dynamo altogether and once the belt is on - put it back in place. Les.
80INCH
They are a bit of a bugger to put on aren't they! Yes it may be easier to unbolt the dynamo; then put it in position before bolting it back. i think thats what i did because its so thick the regular way is just to difficult.. i managed to do it once with screwdrivers as levers pulling it round the pully from underneath tho. HoggyN
I seem to remember having to unbolt the fan pulley to get a new fan belt on - although why I did that and not just unbolt the dynamo is beyond me!
Wattle
Well I removed the dynamo, I can just manage to get the belt in the dynamo groove. But no chance what so ever of refitting the dynamo bolts, it no way near. I think the belt that I removed was split because it had been to tight. I have been to Fenners who specialise in belts, and there is none anywhere near this size, they are all a lot longer. Could the pulleys be too big? Any ideas please. Surely people haven't struggled like this for the last fifty years. Phil
Les Henson
Perhaps you can stretch the new belt a bit - prior to fitting it? Loop it under a jack and over the top and then rasie the jack. I suppose it depends on how much it needs to be stretched to get it to fit. Les.
edwardatherton
Alternatively, find a bottom pulley off a 6-cylinder and water pump/alternator pulleys off a 2.25 then you can fit the narrower fan belts which are much more common and only a couple of quid each (and easier to fit). 80INCH
are you sure you have the right belt? where did you buy it from.
secondjeremy
I refitted the old belt to my 80 inch the other day. Even with no radiator it wasn't easy but I put that down to the pulleys being freshly painted. Looks like a new one would be difficult and might well require more than the obvious dismantling - like removing a pulley.
Wattle
Now sorted. i got a new belt from Dunsfold and it was 3 3/8"(thats 85mm) longer than the GFB40995 belt (which is the Unipart equivalent). Fitted easily. A big thanks to Dunsfold Land Rovers and everybody who replied. Thanks Phil watson.
