2 questions for you fellas

Recommended Posts

Right got back off me holiday today, I dont know why I bother as you feel knackered when you come back and theres loads to catch up on, The gaffa wanted to go camping <_< Still land rover magazines kept me occupied while the regulars polished there caravans and read readers digest. ;)

Anyways back to the defender, First question is the wires out the dash have been cut so many times in the past that Im going to have to run new wires to fit a stereo, Is it just a case of a lead from the battery to the stereo and a lead from somewhere on the ignition and an earth lead??

Secondly im changing the flange on the transfer box end tomorrow to adapt a disco 2 dc prop (temporary measure as the prop was peanuts) to my tdi, Is there a gasket that will need replacing when I remove the flange like on the diff where the front seal can leak etc

Cheers fellas

To fit my stereo I used a random ignition feed (checked it using a light bulb to complete the circuit) and piggy backed off the clock or ciggy lighter, works fine. I think I did it off the clock actually.

As stated above run 3 new wires, use the following colours to keep it 'standard' to make life easier in the future :)

Permanent live (remeber to put a fuse) - yellow

Ignition live - red

Earth - black

Get a male iso block from a car accessory shop, and solder it onto the end, after that it's plug and play with whatever stereo you want :)

I can't remember the speaker wire colours (i.e. which wires relate to which speaker), but again you'll be able to find it on the internet / haynes and join these to another iso block.

This is an iso plug :

(The bottom part of the plug in the picture is the power cable section, the top part is for the speakers)

Coincidentally, I am doing the same radio wiring job today. I bought the ISO plugs with tail wires from revealcable.co.uk and each of the tail wires has printed onto it where to connect. (nice and easy :D )

They also sell the 'other side' connectors from the ISO to radio. Much easier and cheaper than mucking around with bullet connectors etc.

If your just changing the flange then you don't have to remove the seal, the flange just slides out. Part available for about 4-6 poundes from landrover.

You will need a new 30mm lock nut, felt washer though.

Thanks for all that fellas,

On the propshaft front its fitted and ive just done a 20 mile test drive and I swear it drives smoother! Stereo wiring sounds easier enough so will be on that soon, (He says zzzzzap buzz!!!) I remember the first time I did a stereo in my old escort, The main beam kept coming on when I turned the stereo on :lol: Still Little bit wiser now!

Cheers fellas
