gibbon
Hi, I've got a 200tdi disco engine in my 90, any tips on where I can find the engine number as the insurers are asking for it....!?
western
on the engines right hand side, just below number 1 injector & above the cam follower side cover plate is a horizontal surface, the engine serial number Should be stamped into that area & should start with 12L like this 12L00001
JimAttrill
And if it doesn't start with 12L you have a nicked engine (not that the other applies either).

110_USA
Since we're on the topic, how about a 2.5L N/A Diesel?
western
depends on age of engine, the serail number will be in 1 of 2 locations. 1 -- engines left side forward of exhaust front flange 2 -- above fuel lift pump on engines right hand side. 110_USA
The only number I could find was. MK2/3 19928C Located in the red circle.
Matt Neale
And if it doesn't start with 12L you have a nicked engine (not that the other applies either). Not quite true Jim. 12L denotes a Discovery spec. 200 Tdi. 11L = Defender 200 Tdi. There are plenty of other variations depending on the spec / fitment etc. Matt
western
Yep thats it in the later serial number location,it should read something like 12J*****C add your 19928 & you have a genuine LR 2.5 naturally aspirated 2.5 litre diesel engine. try a wire brush on that area & you should find 12J at the front. gibbon
I presume that 300tdi engines are numbered in the same place as the 200tdi's, but what number series are these engines....? Also main numptee question - how do you tell the difference between a 200tdi and the 300tdi engines?
GB75
Also main numptee question - how do you tell the difference between a 200tdi and the 300tdi engines? Dead easy once you know, open bonnet look just below rocker cover on the front of the engine for large alloy cylindrical spring loaded belt tentioner if it has one its a 300tdi.
