pist0nbr0ke
Afternoon all, I think i may know the anser to this already but just wanted to get some opinion before I charge in. I have a 200tdi that has done about 80K on the clock, it is nicely placed in my 1984 '90. However, i have a puffing noise coming from the back of the block around about the headgasket!!! Is there a chance/hope that it could be something else? Also if i were to pay someone for the privilage of changing it, how much it is likely to cost? Anyone want some beer money?? Many thanks Neil
mmgemini
Head gasket gone between No 3 and 4 venting into the push rod space. 80,000 miles is a little early for that to happen, about 10,000 to early Sorry Neil. I no longer have the strength to tighten a Tdi head down. mike
LandyManLuke
Mine went between no4 and the outside world. You could stick your hand down the back of the head and feel it chuffing.
Mo Murphy
Uncle Les Henson is in Swindon, he fixes Land Rovers properly. Worth a pm. Mo
Les Henson
No4 to the bulkhead/firewall. If Mike is right, I'll buy him a pint As Luke says - hug the engine and you'll feel it/ Les.

pist0nbr0ke
Thanks guys, Im worried that we all hug our engines! but that is how to feel it. As to the second part.. how much? cheers Neil
Les Henson
Head gasket is about £7 - you could lash out and replace the other gaskets too, so you could be looking at the horrifying price of about £23. About 3-4 hours work if you clean everything before putting it back together. Les.
pist0nbr0ke
right, an update! Removed head and found the gasket is breaking down at the back hence the chuffing. My question now is how to identify which one has been fittied, where should i be looking? cheers Neil
Les Henson
There are a number of holes in a tab of the cylinder head - known as notches. This is a 200TDi head gasket, but an example of what you need to look for. In general, 3-notch is standard factory fitment. Les.
