Rear diff play

Recommended Posts

hi

i have had a bit of a knock when taking up drive, whilst looking for the problem i have found about 2-3mm of play up and down on the rear diff flange. i assume that the pinion shaft bearings are shot, and the drive flange is probably worn.

so my questions are, where is the best place to get replacement bearings, shims etc? and has anyone rebuilt their diff that could advise me on any problems i might find or special tools, this truck is my daily drive so it needs to be done in a weekend.

The landy is a 1990 2.5td 90

many thanks

matt

I've just had the same problem with my front diff in my challenge truck, but mainly caused by a f@£ked propshaft UJ (note to self use grease gun more  )

Spoke to Steve at Crown Diffs, and was quoted £150 plus VAT for a secondhand diff, and £200 plus VAT for a reconditioned unit, was gonna grab one off him, but he's on holiday for a couple of weeks now!

I ended up sourcing a 24 spline unit myself, and getting my local landrover independant specialist to fit it - tonks 4x4.

Given the magnitude of the job and the amount of tools you need I wouldn't spersonnally attempt to rebuild the diff to install new bearings. Also chances are if its the pinion drive shaft berings that have collapsed then the pinion shaft may well have sustained some damage?

What the oil like, metallic?

If you need help in sourcing a unit, try these guys out ....... skan4x4 a really helpful guy and will deliver next day for 20 squid. Hope this helps.

hi

thanks for the contacts i'll give them a call tomorrow, i dropped the oil out on saturday and it was a bit metalically but not too bad given the short amount of time available i'll get a reconditioned one i might have time to build up a spare before the next one lets go.

many thanks everyone

I also would recomend crown diffs , I received mine today, a recon 10 spline front for a 110 and it is mint with what looks like all new parts. crown wheel and planet bits are defo brand new anyway.

All for 139 quid with no exchange required. I don't know how they do it. :D:D
