dannyspeighty
My 200tdi defender recently started making a whine/squeeking noise in ever gear except 4th then after about a week died completly (wont let me into gears) Anyway i believe after a bit of googling that this is the taper roller bearing and the best bet is to replace the gearbox. I have source a gearbox for £170 and was wondering if anyone had a how to quide for replacing the gearbox? Is it a hard job? what tools i need etc.. I think the new box is from a defender but does it make any difference if its from a disco? I presume the gearing will be higher but is it a straight fit? Thanks
Les Henson
Replacing the gearbox is contained within this thread. The vehicle is a 90, but the method is the same. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=6840 Les.

Thanks Disco main gearbox (LT77) is not the same as a Defender one though. Bellhousing, input shaft and gear selector casting are all different, and (bellhousing excepted) not interchangeable. There are some internal differences as well. Matt

Les Henson
The work involved in that thread, which was replacing the gearbox with an Ashcrofts one and removing the flywheel to do the crank rear seal, took a total of 13hrs to do. fender1234
ive got i the same problem my gearbox is noisy in every gear but fourth so i think its the layshaft bearings. ive had the gearbox out a few times, its not complicated but it does take a while i found lining up the gearbox onto the engine quite time consuming aswell
