JST
Vehicle has a broken rear caliper mounting. the caliper failed around the top mounting bolt, bottom edge of. So could TC be the cause of it? Just speculating really as i am not sure what caused the caliper to fail. It became apparent on a 'normal' track drive but approx 3 days early the vehicle had been heavily bogged in to its axles and some gusto was applied in fwd and rev to try and extract it before a recovery vehicle could be found. On the track drive reversing; squealing from rear and on inspection rear caliper had departed and pivoted on the bottom caliper bolt. showing the top to have failed. I have not heard of this happening (regularly - ie outside of challenge events and serious off road) and wondered if it was a common occurrence. the damage did not occur from debris that i am certain of! - it got stuck in silt on the previous 3 days Those that know me will believe me when i say i wasnt driving as i rarely venture off road!!! (had to get it in before Walfy did!)
Guest WALFY
I'm saying nothing . For a change. So are you after a new caliper now or do you have stock. I may have calipers in the shed but not sure if I have any that would fit yours. It hasn't moved in years so that puts it about pre modern age motoring
honitonhobbit
How the hell can you blame Tony for a broken caliper - was he driving?
JST
Sorry David, when i say TC for those not quite so geeky as Walfy to understand it i mean Traction Control. DSN
I broke the top lug on one of my front calipers a few years ago although luckily during testing brakes on the driveway so not so dangerous when funny noise and soggy pedal as the fluid leaked out. No traction control but probably an age thing.
white90
I'd wager it was hit by something TC(not me) wouldn't break the caliper otherwise there'd be a long list of people suffering from that. in the bog you mention a log/rock hit it, that's what broke mine

roybatty666
My mate bust his in the same place on his Disco, he also got bogged on his tod and gave it some beans trying to get out, it seems the wheel/disc manage to catch a stone which slammed into the caliper busting the mount. I would think the TC operating would be causing less stress on the caliper than when under heavy braking
GBMUD
I had a similar event where a piece of Slindon flint suspended in Slindon mud got caught in the wheel, rotated with the mud etc till it reached a suspension component and then rotated and punctured a hole in the inside of the wheel rim. The only puncture I have suffered where the repair needed a welder. Chris

Chris Funnily enough my mates broken caliper moment also holed his alloy at the same time Spinning is bad mmkay
JST
maybe it was a rock or similar, certainly no evidence to the inside of the alloy though. i was just surprised how it broke considering the tame conditions it was working in and thought TC may have something to do with it as it does brake on and off quite hard.
