Bonnet Pins

Recommended Posts

Bish,

As others said on the slam panel.

First I mounted the pins having eyed up where I wanted them and then put a bit of paint on the top of the pins and lowered the bonnet to touch. Drilled a small pilot hole from the inside out and then drilled the full size holes from the top of the bonnet.

Old pictures that just about show below:-

Edited to Add:- got rid of the bonnet cable and main bonnet catch latch. I left the plunger and spring to stop rattle and he safety/secondary catch just in case.

I mounted mine through the wings just at the back of the straight edge against the radiator, this was so I wasn't going through the checker plate on the bonnet too.... It also missed the checker plate on the wing....

I done away with the cable and the springy bit and just left the little safety catch on....

Thanks folks, most helpfull :)

When removing the spring, is there much preload in it? I presume you just put a screwdriver into the slot on the end and unscrew the pin? Don't really want it firing off unchecked though!:blink:

Mark - MJIbex - how did you leave the spring in? On my 90 the force to compress the spring deflects the slam panel instead

Sorry to hi-jack, but what is that ducting coming off your heater wingtop intake Mo? Pointless :P:P

Also, do you still need a 'Defender Battery Condition Meter'?

Thanks Walfy, another pointless and uninformative post from you. You're consistent mate, I'll give you that :P

James,

That "duct" on the heater air intake is an army item used on winterised vehicles to stop snow clogging up the heater intake in snowy places like Norway. Not really much use for that here :) However, they are really useful for stopping water slopping into the intake when wading (although if the bonnet is under it won't stop that) below bonnet depth and stops that instant windscreen mist that happens as soon as water hits the hot heater matrix and is blown into the cab. It's an excellent piece of kit and is on mine to stay :)

If you have a gauge that you'd like to part with, then please feel free to pm me as I'm still looking :i-m_so_happy:

Cheers

Mo

Bish,

One other thing, I've left the secondary catch on mine as I have experienced the bonnet disappearing over the top of the 90 at 70mph and it's not something I'd like to repeat :D Muggins here left the bonnet pins undone :)

Bish,

Never acutally took my spring off. The reason I did the whole thing was I got bored of the catch geting full of mud and not being able to open the bonnet.

Did not have the problem with the slam panel deflecting; do you have the diagonal braces, can just be seen in my picture either side of the winch solenoid pack. The force the spring exerts should be the same wether the catch is in place or not?!

Mine were closer to the bonnet edge than Mo's and at 90 degrees to.

Mark.

My point was that for it's intended purpose it's pointless in this country. We've not had snow that deep since the winter of 76, I'm sure you remember that :P . If you are wading that deep the water should be draining out the drain hole in the bottom of the ducting, so shouldn't get sucked through the heater matrix

Indeed I do remember that snow, Walfy, chest deep drifts ! :)

The flaw in your argument regarding the water is that the hole in the top is considerably larger than the hole in the bottom even with my rubber drain removed, thus I got a steamed up screen, so I bought a snow shield and now no more steaming :)

Now, be a good chap and run along, that's quite enough bollox from you for one night :P

Right, so you left the spring in but removed the latching mechanism that grips the pin within the spring? I presume the pull handle and cable went too?

I will definately leave the secondary mechanism in for all the obvious reasons.

I didn't have any slam panel struts as the auto box cooler is in the way. Last night I managed to get one in (with the help of LR tool no.1) which is enough to enable me to shut the bonnet in the traditional way. It will be like that for the MOT on Thursday and then I shall explore the pins options. I quite like the fact that the bonnet is secure as you cannot open it from outside (well, not easily!) so will deter scroats from meddling. Don't really want 'ickle padlocks rattling around on the bonnet pins!

Opinions....?

been looking at something like that to stop the mud have you seen the price they go for on the bay? they go for a fair few pennies also usful for them mornings when you get a proper frost

dave

Porny sells them Dave, brand new and made of aluminium. A bit pricey but better than forking your wedge for a battered old rusty one off ebay :)
