jack54turbo
hi guys im new to the forum(realy great stuff!) first problem.! my question is, i have a 1996 defender 300tdi i paid £1100 pounds for it(spent allot more since!) with 197k on the clock! starts on the ket first time every time! but the engine is very tappitty!(technical term!) i have tried simply adjusting the tapperts etc, but it is still very bad. i have been considering replacing the engine with a 200tdi auto unit?, is replacement a bit drastic? should i be considering a rebuild first? new head? and shells?----whaaaaat?!?!?! help lol second problem/question. could some one please offer a few ideas, a check list if u like,of things for for me to check out, bearings?, belts?, shafts, transmission, engine! etc, etc, ! I keep spending money on upgrades and not on things that could actually need doing! thanks allot for your time jack.
JimAttrill
Check that you have the valve stem caps in place. If they are missing the rockers wear badly and you can't adjust them properly with a feeler gauge. However, you can adjust them with a DTI except that is a pain as the head is non-magnetic alloy and most DTI stands rely on magnetism to hold them. It might pay you to take the head off and check the valve guides etc. A complete 'head job' doesn't cost much as the guides and valves are quite cheap, even new rockers don't cost much. You can then check out the wear on the tappet slides and guides. These also won't break the bank. As you say your engine starts easily the chances are there is nothing wrong with the compressions, though you could get them checked before you take the head off. I wouldn't easily replace a 300 with a 200, though 200s seem to be easy to source in the UK now with all the early Discos falling to bits. SteveG
If I bought a Defender I didn't know the history of, I would do the following.. Change all fluids.. Brakes, Coolant, Clutch, Axles, Engine, Gearbox, transfer Box Change Air filter and Oil filters Check.. Brake pads for wear Brake discs for wear Bearings all round and re-grease them all if ok. Re-grease/oil hubs. Propshafts for UJ and centre spline wear. Replace if necessary Handbrake, clean and adjust Battery connections Lights for corrosion around bulb holders general condition of outriggers, rear cross member etc Shock and Spring mounts Springs and shocks Bushes on all suspension/steering arms Pipes and belts in engine bay That's all can think of for now, I'm sure others will add ones that have been missed, but it should keep you busy ;) Steve

Retroanaconda
I would say it's easier to do than a 'normal car' because of the orientation of the engine, and the fact that you have loads of room to work in Or you do on a 200Tdi anyway, don't know if the 300 is any different size/position wise.
