Madcowz
Hi, I have recently been noticing a whining noise and would appreciate some advice on the cause. I have a 200tdi with an R380. I can either be in gear or neutral and moving or stationary. But it always occurs when I put my foot down on the accelerator and decreases when I lift the foot. When I do ease off the accelerator, the sound winds down rather than just stopping straight away. It isn't the normal turbo whistle sound as I know what that sounds like, but is engine based as far as I know. I have had a listen in the engine bay when the engine was cold and couldn't hear anything. Next step is to try it when it has heated up a bit. thanks, mad
fender1234
i had loud whining noise from my 200tdi a year or so ago. we checked turbo, power steering pump, went away when i had the cambelt changed so assumed it was the tensioner. not sure if thats any help
FridgeFreezer
Open the bonnet and have a listen - could be any engine-driven ancillary for a start.
Milemarker Type S
Check your inlet manifold gasket and all the turbo intake pipes as you may have a small leak that sounds like a high pitched whine- I thought I had killed my turbo when mine did it. Madcowz
Thanks for the replies. I had a listen under the bonnet but can't hear anything from there. So I sat back in the cab and I could hear it coming from around the fuse box area/transmission tunnel area. So I climbed underneath as far as I could while still reaching the pedal and tried again, but couldn't hear anything. Seems like it is only audible from inside which doesn't make sense. FridgeFreezer
It's a long shot but it's not interference coming through the radio is it? Alternators can generate some good wooshing noises through your speakers.
Madcowz
Nope, the radio is not on. Good idea tho. This has me stumped. I thought it was gearbox to start with as it increased when I put the pedal down and reduces when I lift my foot, but I can be parked in neutral and it still happens. Will ask my neighbour to do the throttle while I climb all over/in/under it and try and find the source.
Retroanaconda
Does the clutch affect it?
Guppy
I have a similar issue but mine only occurs when the vehicle is moving at about 40mph or more. Other than that - EXACTLY the same symptoms. Bloody irritating.
