Marc1187
Grinding into reverse is very common, there isnt a synchromesh on reverse gear so its likely to do that, i wouldnt worry unless it was really dificult to get into reverse. Whining from the back is unlikely to be caused by worn diff mounts, as ciappi said check the tyres, they can feather on the edges (specially on older models) causing a lot of road noise. If the diff bush's are gone, its more likely to be just the front one worn/split which cost about £12.50+vat from dealers and only take 15 minutes to fit when the cars in the air on a ramp.
