SpenB
Hi All, Thanks for all the help so far. I have 265x70 tyres on disco steel rims fitted to my defender but when on full or near full lock the tyres rub I thought i heard somewhere that you can sort this by adjusting the "stops"...... Question is what are these stops?, having looked underneath and still no wiser - where are they? and what do i do with them? Thanks in advance. SteveG
steering stop are a bolt located on front of each swivel housing. Undo lock nut, and screw bolt out a few tuens to give less lock and stop the rear of your tyre rubbing on the radius arm. Once you have ok position just tighten up lock nut. The reason your tyres are rubbing is due to the use of disco steels. These don't have very good offset. Fitting a steel wheel like a LR Wolf type or common aftermarket ones like modular/8-spokes would give you more steering lock with your 265's. Les Henson
The lock stop is the large 19mm head bolt you see in this picture - There's a lock nut on it as well, and these can snap off if you're not careful. Jack both front wheels off the ground and put the steering on full lock. Undo the bolt until the wheel is 3/4 - 1" clear of the radius arm. Turn the steering the opposite way and do the same thing on the opposite side. When you lower the truck back down the wheel will move towards the radius arm by approx 1/2", but will still be clear of it. Les.
lrfarmer
i made one of theses for each side, dosen't stop it rubbing but gives me full lock when trialing as my blocks only go in for the MOT and isn't as hard on the tyres when thay rub
alantd
What would happen if you put spacers in? The thought of reduced steering lock on my 110 is quite something! I already cross county boundaries when trying to turn round.
Les Henson
Spacers would do the same thing. Some are marked 'Not for road use' so there's a can of worm there potentially - (tyre protrusion, insurance issues, etc). I don't know if they affect the turning circle though. Les. JimAttrill
I have heard that with the lock stops untouched the spacers improve your steering lock from Supertanker to Queen Mary on a 110. I considered sharing a set - fronts only - with another owner but the things are just too expensive really. And they must put strain on the wheel and swivel bearings.
