white90
The alternator is located on the left-hand side of the engine bay - directly under the top radiator hose. Disconnect one of the battery terminals, then unclip and remove the top section of the fan shroud. You will then have access to the fan belt tensioner. Put a 15mm socket or spanner on the centre nut of the tensioner and pull it towards the drivers side. The belt will become slack and you can remove it from the alternator pulley. There's a heat shield on the back of the alternator, which is held in place by 3 x 8mm nuts. Two are easy enough to get at, but the third is tucked down underneath. You may find that the whole stud will turn rather than just the nut. A 10mm spanner on the stud will prevent this from happening. Note the position of the wires, then disconnect them (could be 8 or 10mm and one or more may be captive) Single 10mm x M8 thread bolt at the bottom. A longer 10mm head bolt with 13mm nut passes right through the top. The alternator will then come away. There's a radio suppressor on the old unit, which has to be swapped over. Note which terminal it's connected to and the earth point (one of the pillars). Note also that it goes underneath the spade connector and the suppressor sits in it's own guide in the plastic cover. Put the new alternator in place, slide the top bolt in and attach the nut, then replace the lover bolt and tighten it. There's a split bush in the top rear mounting - as you tighten the nut it will be pulled through the housing until it butts against the mounting bracket. Reattach the wires as shown. Replace the heat shield, pull the tensioner back and put the belt back on - making sure it's located in all the pulley wheels. Replace the fan shroud top cover, then reconnect the battery. The vehicle alarm may go off, so lock and unlock the vehicle to reset it. Les.
