Retroanaconda
Just a quickie. I have BFG Trac Edge tyres on my truck at the moment, they seem to be very good too, but they are old and will need replacing some time soon. Just wondering, what would be the present-day equivalent in terms of BFG MTs or ATs? They look slightly more MT to me, but I'd like the better opinion of others too What I actually put on the vehicle may well be different depending on what I'm using it for most at the time, but it would be good to know what option would be the 'stay the same' one. Cheers

sheeppimp
neither MT or AT, when my Trac Edge's wore out I replaced them with Goodyear MTRs as the closest I could find - performed well both on and off road
Retroanaconda
Hmm, well I would quite like to go with BFG tyres again. These perform brilliantly and appear to have lasted for a long time, and the general consensus is that they are a good brand of tyre. And I'll be buying new tyres rather than remoulds too I think. Thanks for the input guys
Milemarker Type S
I would personally go for the BFG MT's- they behave as well on the road as my old Trac edges did and are better in the gloopy stuff. For an MT tyre their road behaviour, noise and wear rates are very impressive.
JST
i have a set of trac edges on my td5 and Mts on the tdi - trac edges behave more like ATs on road in my opinion, MT are OK on road but you loose mpg and they wear quickly. when my Trac Edge wear out they will be replaced with ATs - MTs in my opinion are too aggressive for much road use. western
I got 50,000+ miles from my last set of BFG MT's & a fair bit of that was road work & no punctures. had Trac Edge previously & they were superb tyres.
q-rover
General Grabber ATII are also a very good tyre, in my opinion.
DaveSIIA
Grabber AT2's get my vote. Had them on my Td5 110 to replace a set of BFG MT's. They're a much better balanced tyre for road use and not too bad off road. My 300Tdi 110 has Trac Edge and I have just replaced an axle pair with Insa Turbo Traction Track while I run out the remaining three Trac Edge. Although the advertising blurb talks of the ITTT's being a replacement of the Trac Edge, and the pictures show them to be exactly the same tread pattern, there are some differences in the lugs at the edge of the tread. Although they are marked as 235/85R16, the ITTT's look more like they have been moulded on 7.50 carcasses! I have had no end of problem getting the vehicle to handle properly - think Escort Mk2 rally car sideways with the ITTT's on the rear and noticeable understeer with them on the front Tried different pressures and even checked all the bushes in case that was exacerbating the problem. This highlights the differences between tyre brands. Bottom line is I'm giving serious thought to selling the Trac Edges while they still have a reasonable amount of tread and buying a full set of AT2's rather than run everything down. Retroanaconda
Thanks for the interesting inputs guys, great help. I think I'll likely end up with a set of BFG A/Ts. The General Grabber AT2s look to be a copy of those, and I do like BFG so I think they'll fit the bill well. Also matches the use of the truck I am managing at the moment, with more on-road than off Thanks again.
BogMonster
To answer the original question the present day "equivalent" (the tyre that replaced it in the range) was (IIRC) called something like the Commercial T/A but looking at the website it no longer seems to be made either anyway it was more road biased than the Trac Edge so not really a direct replacement. I'd get AT2s unless you fancy a remould which I don't.
Mark90
Cooper ST's would be a good replacement for trac edge, they are a bit more agressive than AT's but not quite an MT either.
stravaigin
I'm on Cooper STs at the moment after using BFGs for years. I still think its a shame they discontinued the Trac Edge. BFG ATs are great all rounders and they last really well but I wanted something just a little bit more agressive. I am very pleased with the Coopers performance wise but they won't last as long as the BFGs, they are a fair bit cheaper though. Has anyone "sipped" a BFG MT here in the UK? That would be interesting, I have driven a RR set up like this and was impressed.

freeagent
another vote here for General Grabber AT2's... i do 200+ road miles per week in my disco, and am well impressed with these tyres, they are better on road than my old Marshall road tyres, and not too sad off road... I had Trac Edges on my old 110... they were very good, but I'm well impressed with the AT2s...
Kev Baldwin
Cooper ST is the closest thing to the old Trac Edge. More aggresive than either the General AT2 or BFG AT but stops short of a full MT. Had two sets of ST's on two different trucks and can't fault them. Some decent online deals here - http://www.tyrespec.co.uk/products/?pattern=Discoverer%20ST
