trendkill
Looking for a new air filter as mine is falling to bits (3.5 on carbs) Current set-up is 2 standard pipe's into one box (oval) - im sure this is the standard system? I have a gas system so ive been told to stay away from k&n's Any ideas of something to replace & possibly help the engine breath better? Cheers! FridgeFreezer
110 V8 or even just 200TDi filter would be an improvement over the tiny stock filter.

orangemach5
Whats the problem with sticking a pair of k&n's on the carbs? Surely its ideal especially if its used mainly for road use, i cant see it upsetting the lpg???

Ive heard that it wont run properly -as there's more air mixing with fuel Is there something i can get that goes where the black box is at the moment? (sorry for the bad explanation)
orangemach5
I dont know of any replacement aftermarket filter boxes that will simply go in place. You could keep your eye out for a 3.5 carb 90/110 airbox which has a tee piece that sits in pretty much the same place as the original airbox but uses a more conventional cylindrical element filter housing remote mounted with a section of hose. etc. Other solution (cheapest!) is just make your own, few lengths of air hose and any old traditional air box

The T-piece is in front of the carbs as I couldn't get away with it behind it due to lack of height for the hoses but I'm sure you've got more space on a Defender. I connected it up using two hoses from an Escort and a small piece from a Saab. It worked fine and this way I had it in the right spot for adding a snorkel. Bowie69
Whats the problem with sticking a pair of k&n's on the carbs? Surely its ideal especially if its used mainly for road use, i cant see it upsetting the lpg??? It does upset the LPG, very difficult to make them run on it properly - a mate had to fit an aerosol lid and drill holes in it as a restrictor until his engine would run properly as there is not enough vacuum produced by a K&N filter to draw the gas in. So many people say they won't run right with K&N, on many many forums that is.
FridgeFreezer
I'd be more concerned that K&N's don't actually filter anything out

BogMonster
I'd be more concerned that K&N's don't actually filter anything out Come on now, they filter out squirrels, mice etc, don't be unfair
Quagmire
I have a P6 airbox, these are apparently a little better than the oval type filter can of similar design but having not done any testing or tried both i cannot comment on how true this is. filter elements were dead cheap too
Landowner
It does upset the LPG, very difficult to make them run on it properly - a mate had to fit an aerosol lid and drill holes in it as a restrictor until his engine would run properly as there is not enough vacuum produced by a K&N filter to draw the gas in.So many people say they won't run right with K&N, on many many forums that is. If the air filter badly restricts the flow then it is either too small or it is blocked. Standard filters dont restrict flow it's the design of the airbox that does that in an effort by manufacturers to silence the induction. So the K+N type filters let the motor draw more air because they dont use an airbox. If you want a K+N (no better than paper at filtering) then stick it in your air box and keep it quiet and also keeping the airflow standard. Why fit a K+N type then? methinks that you can reuse them after cleaning and oiling so cheaper, but you must clean and re oil frequently, you cant fit and forget. Methinks open K+N type filters would need the gas turning up a sniff because you have at least double the inlet size for the motor to draw on. Am I making sense
101sean
Been discussed a fair bit on the 101 forum where even on a standard filter members have had problems with LPG. Not a filter problem as such just LPG set up especially on basic systems. Anything supposedly freer flowing just makes it worse. I'm still on my 10yo standard filter on the 101, never had to replace it. I'll admit to an ITG one on the TD5 Defender, had heard that oily ones can affect the MAF but been OK so far (ITG seems to be revoltingly sticky rather tha oily! )
