Just went on a trip to Scotland and back and before we set off I had a good look over the old girl. Apart from servicing the usual parts I noticed that the core of her radiator is starting to lose some of the cooling fins.

I didn't have time to change it before we set off but as I am sat idly watching reruns of Top Gear and Sharpe I thought I had better give it a go.

She's a 300Tdi M Reg 3 Door. If I replace the radiator should I also replace the hoses? Are there any parts other than the radiator to order at the same time? Wouldn't want to find that out once it's all out!

Many thanks,

Given the peanuts it'll cost to replace the hoses it's probably worth doing, and a new set of jubilee clips to boot. Obviously you'll need anti-freeze and water too :P

Take it you mean Top and Bottom hoses? Thought about that. Jubilee clips weren't on my list though. Many thanks.

Dont forget to get a new plug for the thermostat housing (if its plastic its bound to shear off). You should be able to get a nice brass or steel one for a couple of pounds from the plumbers merchant (1/2 BSP thread).

Yep, have that on my list. Will also be changing my water pump and the p gasket whilst I'm at it as it appears to have a leak.

Is there another part round there that can leak coolant? It just seems that there is a lot of fluid for just the p gasket.

the p gasket will leak a fair bit but there is a core plug hiding behind the water pump have a look when you strip it out to replace the p gasket

Thanks for the pic Les. Have been reading some of your articles in the archive; very helpful. Which plug in this pic is the core plug?

Also, have just found out that the system is pressurising so will be changing the head gasket as well!

Ho, hum, the joys of landy ownership!

I second that motion !! Nothing to save actually <_< . One notices the old hoses are as soft as bananas :P
