Megansfolly Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 whilst i have my 200 on an engine stand i ve decided and need to take take the head off (broken glow plug) apart from changing the gasket and bolts what else should i change Quote
BogMonster Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 How old is the engine? That probably dictates whether it is worth looking at valves and even rings/bore work. You'll need a new manifold gasket on reassembly but I am sure you knew that. I'd change the timing belt while you have it out of the vehicle, if it hasn't been done very recently, and also do the rear crank seal and the seals inside the timing cover while they are easy to get at I'd also fit a new clutch (complete, including a new fork etc) when it goes in, for much the same reasons. Les Henson Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 If one or more of the exhaust ports are oily/sooty, then a decoke and new stem seals. If the engine was fine before the plug broke, then just head gasket and inlet/exhaust gasket. Perhaps rocker gasket too if it's a bit leaky. Rinse through the oil seperator with petrol or paraffin to clean it. Depends how far you want to go really - you could rebuild the head while it's off. Lapping the valves in is very tedious Les. Megansfolly Posted December 30, 2008 Author Posted December 30, 2008 hi sorry should have said i am changing crank so buttom end on engine is off just went to change glow plugs and pulled one out and tip is still in hole and cant get it out so thoughthead off to get this out change head gasket and bolts whilst i am at it Quote
western Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 use the same thickness head gasket when you refit the head [same number of holes punched in the tab on the right hand side of the gasket] Quote
Lars L Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Also check the head for true flatness or give it a light skimming. Ali heads deform under pressure and this is not rectified when tightening the bolts as with cast iron heads. Quote
