rich90 Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Hi all Having problems with my 1985 90. While in traffic today I lost all drive, the hi and low selector makes no difference, and feels different. Doesn't feel like its selecting anything. I think the clutch is still working, because if I try and select a gear without using the clutch I can hear a graunching noise. I have checked the linkage and nothing is loose or broken off. Could something internally be broken? Any advice is appreciated Richard Quote
Diesel_90 Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Have you tried putting it in difflock? Quote
rich90 Posted December 31, 2008 Author Posted December 31, 2008 Cant get anything. Hi, low, Difflock hi or low. Quote
Diesel_90 Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 sounds like you have pulled the center out of the clutch or the mainshaft teeth have worn on the gear that goes into the T/case. Quote
roybatty666 Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 did you have a loud clonk when taking up drive before you had the problem? If so you could have stripped the splines on your gearbox output shaft if they were heavily warn. edit ooooh beaten by milliseconds Quote
roybatty666 Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 if your splines were going you would be getting a loud clonk that you would have known about before that I had a disco that blew a center diff on road but that went with a bang and then had no drive. pull the pto cover off the back of the t-box and see if the input gear is spinning and not just the shaft inside it, if thats fine it is something deeper in the t-box Quote
rich90 Posted December 31, 2008 Author Posted December 31, 2008 I have been having problems selecting low range and low range difflock. I was wondering maybe the problem has just got worse and have lost all drive. Quote
jcwcooper Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Whilst offroading last month i managed to pull the front output shaft out, I ended up with no drive what so ever. This would proberly be quite noticable though as the oil will be everywhere. Dave. Quote
lrfarmer Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 my disco did something like what your describing, it was the grub screw came loose so was stuck in nutral the lever did feel loose when it went Quote
JST Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 T box just not engaging properly? get underneath and trace the T box hi low linkage, it run from the top lever down (40deg?) towards the t box (handbrake end) try levering the little lever at the end of it to get it to engage. Quote

rich90 Posted January 1, 2009 Author Posted January 1, 2009 Fixed it!!!! Removed the cover on the top of the transfer box, where there is a shaft with two forks on it. Pushed the rod which the forks normally push into the transfer box. Now I have High box! Must be the linkage needs to be adjusted. Haven't got a clue how though. Quote
roybatty666 Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 I had to do this today to adjust mine following my gearbox change coincidently (3 times ) the easiest thing to do is take off the rubber trim convering the gearbox tunnel, take off the gear nobs and slid off the rubber gator and pull out the foam bung arround the sticks , then unscrew the self tapping screws that hold the tunnel on (2 at the back, 6 around the bulkhead side and 2-3 each side into the floor and the whold tunnel will come off There is an adjuster on the hi - low shaft that comes undone sometimes that you can use to fine tune, although what I did was just undo the 10mm pinch bolt on the top clamp at the hi - low stick end and slid it of and advanced it one spline on the splined shaft Remember that you have the tunnel to go back on so you may find with it on the leaver hits the stick aperture (like I did yay) so adjust it till it changes gear then pop the tunnel back on without screwing it down to make sure it doesn't fowl things. Also I found holding the stick over in difflock made sure the complete splined shaft stuck out properly when pushing the hi-low clamp back on to the splined shaft. Once you get it apart it will all make sense Quote
