JST Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 8274 wired up with albrights. was powering in the rope after cleaning it from the weekend and noticed a spark between the drum and the nut of one of the mounting bolts. it did it once each time the motor was engaged. after doing it 3 times the winch stopped. solenoids just clicked. i rotated the drum slightly by hand and then it all worked again with no sparks as expected. so my guess is that the motor (Bowmotor) shorted somewhere and passed the current through the gears to the drum which then earth on the nuts is this feasbile and why would it do it? i checked the earth strap and all good no problems i could see there. the wiring setup for it goes back to the albrights then straight to the battery and hasn't been changed for a long time and never used to be a problem. any thoughts Quote
Dave W Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 If it's an old/well used motor it's possible that debris/dust from the brushes and commutator has built up and is providing a path to the metal of the armature/spindle of the motor. Theoretically this could then find it's way through the gears to the drum which is electrically isolated from the case by the nylon bushes it runs on. It could also be caused by an insulation breakdown in the armature windings although dust is more likely. It's worth cleaning the dust out of the motor at regular intervals anyway as it will prolong the life of the motor. Quote
JST Posted January 2, 2009 Author Posted January 2, 2009 with it being my motor dust is a likely hood, but the motor is almost new has done less than 100 pulls i expect. so pull the motor and have a look i guess. Quote
white90 Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 loose earth James Mine did this a while back Quote
ciderman Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 As Tony says above , I had it on your 2 dayer on the sunday , On top of the bowl in the quarry , The thing stopped altogether , Found out the terminal was loose on the winch batteries , Only found this out because it started working again after I washed it and sparks were jumping from the mounting bolts . alex milton-haynes Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 id say loose earth or slightly corroded too.clean it up and cover in copper grease avoid it rusting Quote
JST Posted January 2, 2009 Author Posted January 2, 2009 earth winch end is good, will check battery end tomorrow Quote
ciderman Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 To illiminate this Just run a jump lead from a good earth point on the motor body to the battery neg Quote
JST Posted January 6, 2009 Author Posted January 6, 2009 stripped the winch today, some car*p in the bottom of the the end (furtherest from the winch body) so cleaned up and refitted, fingers crossed time will tell, decided not to do much winching with it as the Dyneema was still frozen on from yesterdays DRD!
