sotal Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Anyone know what thread it is on a series 3 wheel stud? A friend is in need of some replacement wheel studs for his plant trailer, we know the dimensions but to order some we need to know the thread. The nuts fit perfectly onto the series 3 studs so I presume it's the same. I'm guessing it's a UNF thread? Also anyone recommend a good place to buy wheel studs from? Quote
BogMonster Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 A bit of research with Google suggests that very early (S2/2A) studs were 9/16 BSF which later changed to the M16 studs found on all later vehicles. Check before you buy though, Google is not always correct Quote
David Sparkes Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 Backing what BogMonster has written, because I see too much Series 2 information. Series 2 did start off as 9/16" BSF, but these screwed into the hub. A common upgrade is to drill these out and use the later M16 studs, as these pull in, and are less likely to unscrew after somebody has been at them with an air gun wound up to maximum. Good place to buy in Staffordshire - try Beamends http://www.beamends-lrspares.co.uk/ who do NOT do Mail Order. Good luck with the Geraniums. Quote
sotal Posted January 3, 2009 Author Posted January 3, 2009 Thanks David, Beam-ends is about 1/2 a mile away! He does the series studs but the splined bit isn't wide enough on them for the trailer hubs, the trailer ones do however have the same thread. I was surprised they were Metric though. Many thanks ofr the confirmation on M16. Quote
David Sparkes Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 I was surprised they were Metric though. Yes, At that time, late 60's / early 70s, it was a bit cutting edge for Land Rover!! Quote
mmgemini Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 It's M16 but I'd have to check the tap or die for the pitch. mike Quote
bluespanner Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 Yeah its much finer than your average m16 bolt. Its the same thread as the lower caliper bolt on iveco 49.10s. Dont ask how i know. Quote
mmgemini Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 Well I now have the wheel nut tap in my hand M16 X 1.5 HTH mike Quote
sotal Posted January 3, 2009 Author Posted January 3, 2009 Fantastic - Just got to find some with the correct number of splines and the correct diameter and at a good price and we're away! Quote
