rrover Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 Hi, The Td5 engine in my 2003 Defender is kaput and a'm sourcing a good used one. I can buy a good 2000 engine but now I've been told that I must have a 2003 or later engine because there have been modifications from 2003 on. I have never heard of any modifications. Does anybody know what the differences between a pre 2003 and 2003 on engine are? Is it only the ECU? Thanks. Quote
Andrew Chua Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 i believe it's 2002 and beyond. don't remember any changes to the 2003 version asides from rounded instead of welded front door frames. pre-02 had the non-flash programmable ECU. They introduced the CAT in the down pipe and removed the wiremesh connector in favour of the acordian pipe conduct. They introduced the silver bezel, in place of the black one on the center console. that's about all the things i can remember about it. EGR might have been introduced before that, you do not really need it. Quote
AndyEvans Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 also the emissions change around this time as well Quote
GBMUD Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 For the 2002 model year there was the ECU change (EEPROM type), a headgasket modification (Went to steel shim type) and emissions control measures including catalytic converter. The dashboard changed too with the introduction of the centre radio/switch mount. The side doors did not change but the rear 'safari' door was change to a 1-piece type with, IIRC, steel skin and a different spare wheel mount. The rear Salisbury axle was replaced by the 'P38' or 'Wolf' rear axle. Chris Quote

Injectors and operating pressures (i.e. fuel pressure) Head (external fuel return) Head Gasket (steel) Fuel Regulator ECU and mapping!! Wiring Loom EGR Set-up (very different!) CAT on post 2002 And a few other things.... Ian Quote
rrover Posted January 3, 2009 Author Posted January 3, 2009 Hi all, Thanks for the answers. I was only looking for modifications in the engine to determine if I can use a pre 2002 engine in the 2003 Defender. @ Porny, Can I fit the injectors and EGR from the old engine? Same for the fuel return (blank the not required connection?). And what about the other things? Quote

Yep, you can fit the green top injectors from your current engine... and you 'could' also fit the later EGR set-up. As for the fuel return, your fuel pipe work will fit to the early engine.. so you can leave all the fuel system as is. The difference is in the head, and the fuel regulator block - no need to block anything off. Personally though.... I wouldn't bother. I'd keep looking for a later engine. You will also have to have the files changed on your ECU to suit the older type engine... but it is almost a backward step. Ian Quote
