Hi, i'm new here! Recently bought a 200tdi Disco as wanted to go back to 4x4's again (previous landy was a 1960 series 2).

So, 1 week after buying it and (despite it having a full mot) one of the rear pads is down to the metal. Ok, no probs, new set of pads. Order some, they're wrong!

Basically the pads i have in the back of my disco have two holes at the top that the split pins go through. According to some people i have spoken to these are Defender pads? Does this mean i have defender rear brake calipers and poss a defender rear axle?

Any info any one can give me that might clear this up would be appreciated, especially as the caliper looks like it might need pistons/seals.

Thanks in advance!

Defender back axle seems like a likely explanation as a 90 one will fit though I couldn't honestly remember whether 90 pads have holes or not. There aren't that many different sorts of pads (maybe a dozen or so) so the best bet will be to take out one of your old pads and take it to a store who knows what they are talking about.

My 300TDI (1998) has similar back brake pads.

Two holes and a split pin for each pair, also has a spring to hold the pads down.

Seems normal.

HTH.

I'm picking up some defender pads tomorrow as they look the same etc.

By two holes i meant 2 holes in the pads themselves. 300 tdi rear pads are held in by a spring plate that is held in by the two pins rather than the pins actually going through holes in each pad.

So does anyone know if Defender rear brake calipers fit a Disco axle? I would have thought a Defender diff ratio would be different to a Disco? Is there anyway easy way of identifying the rear axle?

All standard diffs are the same 3.54:1 ratio unless you go back to Series 3 vehicles which were 4.7:1.

I would think the axle tubes and calipers can be swapped around as long as it is a 90 axle. You can probably find out by axle number if you check that against a parts book.

I was at my local Land Rover Dealership yesterday to get some prop shaft UJ's.

The (very helpful) attendant suggested I purchase Defender UJ's because they are cheaper than those for the Disco, even though they are exactly the same, but require the separate purchase (for a few pence) of the grease nipples. Overall some pounds saved!

He let me know that Land Rover frequently mark up parts for the Disco at a higher price, because the customer group is different!
