rekab69 Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Hi All, If I remove the down pipe and center section from my 1998 Td5 110 will I be removing the Catalyst converter and will it show up on the computer at the next MOT...? (does it even have one...?) Cheers Dave.. Quote
headhunter Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 I doubt it. TD5's are often fitted with alternative exhaust arrangements without hitting MOT issues. John Quote

western Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 IIRC diesels under EU/UK law don't need Cat's but are fitted for some overseas markets. Quote
ThreeSheds Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 IIRC diesels under EU/UK law don't need Cat's but are fitted for some overseas markets. My MoT man told me this /\ /\ also. Quote
101sean Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 A UK market 110 of that age shouldn't have one, my 2000 hasn't. As others have said, removing one on a diesel won't affect MOT Quote
oggie27_3 Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 an emissions test on a diesel only involves checking the density of the smoke and not what bad things are in the smoke so removing the cat on a diesel will not warrant a fail on the mot. Quote
crwoody Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 As all above, doesn't need one for a UK spec. My 2001 D90 was never fitted with a cat, I fitted a straight-through centre box replacement pipe a few years ago and it's been through 3 or 4 MOT's since then with no problems at all. It makes a noticeable improvement to the turbo response and sounds better too. Clive Quote
rekab69 Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 Thanks to one and all... Big smiles all round and a great sound to come too.... Thanks Guys.. Quote
GBMUD Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 IIRC Td5s had a cat fitted from MY2002 when emissions went from Euro2 to Euro3. Even so, you can remove the cat on a later one without MOT worries. Chris Quote
JST Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 your '98 td5 wont have a cat. my '99 td5 (90) ran not cat (as std) and a straight through mid pipe, no probs with MOT. Quote
dirkthe1 Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 on a tangent, but similar subject, whats the rules on silencers/mufflers? Quote
western Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I run my 200Tdi without a centre silncer but have kept the tail end silencer, passed it's last 2 MOT's without any comments. Quote
GBMUD Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 on a tangent, but similar subject, whats the rules on silencers/mufflers? The exhaust must be gastight and complete - by complete it means long enough to clear the body. It must not be unreasonably noisy - 'unreasonably' is open to some interpretation, you would expect a V8 racer to be louder than a shopping car for example. There is no test involving a meter other than the testers ears. Chris Quote
LittleBlue88 Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Thats good then, cos my v8 only has a feeble vw-sourced silencer to keep it quiet.....pleasantly loud to anyones ears Quote
