hammoj28 Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Right, another question about my conversion for you lot. Im at the point where i need to sort out the radiator for my conversion. The vehicle is a 1993 defender 90 and the engine is a 3.9efi. Iv noticed you can i get a radiator for an efi v8 90. Does this mean it will work with my 3.9 and i can buy off the shelf hoses. Does it also mean i can use the range rover oil cooler pipes? Whats the best way to go and where should i get a rad. Thanks James. Quote
LittleBlue88 Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Hi there The rad you have seen is for the 50th anniversary 90,i expect its VERY expensive! Second option-90 Turbo Diesel radiator is more than up to the job of cooling a 3.9,half the price and has an oil cooler(should be able to use RR cooler pipes)but rad hoses you will have to modify i think. Hope this helps Quote
hammoj28 Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 Ahhh, i did notice that it was quite expensive.lol My 200tdi rad is in pretty good nick i think. Hmm, not sure on the oil cooler pipes. I was under the impression that they were different thread sizes on the fittings. Haven't tried it though. Yeah, rad hoses will defo need modification. Thanks. James. Quote
western Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 the threaded oil cooler hose fittings in a TD/200/300Tdi radiator are removable, so you might be able to get similar for the RR oil cooler hoses. Quote
Hybrid_From_Hell Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 FWIW I had a 2.5 TD rad made with a wide large finned large tubed HD 6 row core using the tanks from 2.5TD Cools a JED 4.5 V8 and around £200 plus a donor 2.5 rad, can pressure wash it out - only prob is made in surrey Nige Quote
hammoj28 Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 Awesome. Thanks for the replies guys. Im gonna have a look tomorro and see if i can do something with the 200tid rad. Quote
Dave W Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 I've used a 2.5 TD rad on both my 3.9 Defenders, they are the biggest radiators Land Rover have produced for a Defender and the fittings are spot on for a 3.5/3.9. The 50th Anniversary rad isn't as good because it was designed for a serpentine front end and uses a different coolant pipe layout. The oil cooler was a bit difficult to match up with the engine fittings, in the end I bought a couple of TD cooler pipes and used Yorkshire fittings to join them to the 3.9 pipes. The biggest problem is the bottom hose as you need to put a T piece into it for the expansion bottle assuming you use the big black plastic one. I used the T piece from a n/a 2.5 Diesel defender and welded in a smaller outlet as the pipe on the expansion bottle is smaller than the one the diesel engine used. The top hose can use a standard Range Rover item although it will fit better if you cut a couple of inches off it. The TD rad has 2 small pipe outlets, the same as the 3.9 Range Rover rad so no probs there either. Other than when the rad was full of mud or the electric fans died, neither of them has had any problems keeping cool. Quote
hammoj28 Posted January 11, 2009 Author Posted January 11, 2009 Iv been mock fitting things up today. It looks as thought the oil cooler pipes will fit fine from the v8 to the 200tdi rad. The top hose off the 200tdi is spot on too. The bottom hose however is probably gonna cause problems as you say. Will see what i can make up for it. Noticed the viscous fan will go in but would need to do something vlever with a cowling so il prob just get rid of it and use the electric ones off of the range rover. Thanks for the information again. Quote
MattYorke Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 I used a defender bottom hose, cut in the middle, turned round and generally frigged around with a bit, and rejoined with a hose joiner. My motor is a 97 (serpentine) though. For Oil, as commented above a 50th Rad is ££££££, so I installed a mocal oil cooler from think automotive and used my original V8 carb rad If your motor is 93, I think the motor still has the sandwich plate oil cooler? - if so, fitting are pretty easy to sort out. Unfortunatly not currently running with a cowl as again, would need to be 50th anniv one. Cools fine (when it was a bit warmer!), but obviously if you go offroad you really do need a cowl - or electric. M Quote
