muddy Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Evenin all, On my 300 disco the back window (back door) got broken, since its got blanked out windows anyway i am going to put a sheet of metal in. I cut a peice out to fit the hole so i could pop rivet or glue it in place but it doesnt fit as nicly as it could, i then thought about trying to use the old rubber, this would mean that i would alter the door itself so if i dont like it i can put glass back in. But i dont know how much smaller to make it and dont really fancy a HFH moment when I come to fit it If i draw around the inside of the 'lip' will it be too small? or too large? or just right? Any help will be gratefully accepted, Cheers, Will. Quote
Les Henson Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 If you put steel in place of the glass and use the rubber, it would be dead easy to take it out or perhaps it would fall out by itself as the metal flexes. Les. Quote
crwoody Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 You also have an issue where the metal sheet would be a lot thinner than the original glass and would not be held tightly enough by the rubber glazing strip. Quote
muddy Posted January 6, 2009 Author Posted January 6, 2009 Having tried the sheat in the rubber it seems to fit ok thickness wise, its actually out of the floor of a 90 tub so has the u channels spot welded on the back to reduce flex. I'm not sure how this ended up in defender forum i meant to post it in the internation forum Cheers, Will. Quote
pw8757 Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 In all probability Les is better qualified to comment, but isn't there a risk that the vacuum effect at the rear of the vehicle will be strong enough to cause the sheet to come out? Quote
Tear it up Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Have you thought about using coloured perspex (black) or maybe even clear with tint? The advantages of this, it should be as thick as glass and as strong as the steel. As for size I would say it's the same size as the hole that is cut out for the rubber to go into. Quote

I'm a long way from Leeds but if you know people going anywhere near Swanage it is free to you. I only removed it as the heated bit was broken through the middle bought another, tinted it and fitted it, that was the same. So, I have a spare. Kevin Free to any good home. Quote
muddy Posted January 7, 2009 Author Posted January 7, 2009 I have another complete door that i can swap the glass out of but i'm not sure i feel confident enough. Quote

Easy just push the rubber back into the recess with a flat blade screwdriver, start in a corner and "hook" it behind the metal working from the inside, go all along the bottom then up most of the side before pulling to hard, easy! Putting it in is a piece of cake, especially if using an old seal. Kevin Quote
muddy Posted January 8, 2009 Author Posted January 8, 2009 Any tips for putting it back in, will reuse the old seal as I am a tight arse Quote
Late in Life Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Any tips for putting it back in, will reuse the old seal as I am a tight arse Refitting is a five minute job. Put rubber on glass. Run a strong nylon cord 1-2mm thick is best, all the way round in the grove in the rubber where the metal will be, overlap the end of the string in the grove by about 6 inches, also make a loop in the string on the other long edge (assuming the ends meet at the bottom make a loop in the top as well). Get a mate to hold the glass and rubber over the hole from outside and you get in and pull the string from the inside. The idea is that the string pulls the rubber back around the metal lip. If it appears not to be going in straight then start again rather than forcing it. Again with old rubber it'll fit like a glove. If you want to put sealer in do it after, once it is in otherwise you'll get in a horrible mess. If it gets a bit tight on the sides then start at the top by pulling on the loop and working toward where you had got to fron the bottom. Make sense??? Kevin Quote
muddy Posted January 8, 2009 Author Posted January 8, 2009 Perfect sense, i am aware of the principles behind the job of the cord etc i'm just not sure about my ability to do it without cracking the glass I suppose if i take it easy it will be fine, whats the worst that could happen Quote
Late in Life Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 whats the worst that could happen You'll need to come and get mine, lol. They're pretty tough, just don't try to bend it in. Quote
