western Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 check the idle revs when fully warm is between 750 to 850rpm, mine used to do a similar thing when fully hot & I just upped the idle revs a bit, oil light has been fine since. Les Henson Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Ralph has the same old stinky diesel as you - his oil light comes on every 200yds - due to the amount of engine oil it tries to burn/cough out to kill bunnies and birdies. Bodging it - mine used to do a similar thing when fully hot & I just upped the idle revs a bit, oil light has been fine since. Les Quote
russ3120 Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 had exactly the same problem on my disco 200tdi, I changed the oil and filter it was still happening, then I changed the oil pressure sensor and all was sorted oil pressure sensor on ebay hope that helps Quote

T1G UP Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 hello the oil light on my 200 tdi defender flickers after i have been driving it for a while but goes out when i rev the engine a little.i changed the oil and filter not so long ago but still unsure what it could be. it doesn't floicker when the engine is cold. can anyone give me some clues what to change. thank you Your mechanic?! It's about time you got an internet connection luke....i know things happen slowly where you live! Quote
kingstonandy Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Before doing anything else check your dipstick tube. I have seen exactly what you describe and it turned out to be that the olive on the tube had slipped and my mate was unwittingly running the engine with insufficient oil. Quote
western Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 have a read of this thread it has the LR Tech Bulletin within it & this one has a good photo of the olives position. Quote
fender1234 Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 My engine also does this what engine oil is recommended to give me the most chance of getting rid of this problem? Quote
western Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 LR say 10W/40 FOR A 200Tdi, that's what I use & no longer any problem, check the idle revs are set as above &/or replace the oil pressure switch. Quote
disco tony Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 oh dear, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this is more likely.. slipped camshaft bearing Quote
western Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 checked mine by removing the fuel lift pump & mounting plate then looked rearwards you can see if the bearing has moved. Quote
fender1234 Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Having been on the castrol webite they recommend 0w30 engine oil or for 200/300tdi so wondered whether i should try that. Im not going to bother messing about with the cam bearing idea as it would be cheaper to get another second hand engine so i might as well keep driving mine how it is as it hasnt shown any problems Quote
